So I have gotten into foraging lately and came across these puffballs today. Cooked them up and we’re delicious. Now I am waiting to see if I will die

Those puffballs look great. I haven’t found any this year, but did find a ton of chicken of the woods. Wasn’t as young as I would like, but was able to get a pretty decent haul off it anyway. And now I know where to look in the coming years.

first year i harvested autumn olive berries, made some breads and making a cordial for friends xmass presents. its an invasive species that is found all over here in NE, and now is the time for harvest. small tart berries with a seed, that reminds me of pomegranate a little. the breads are awesome.

Puffballs and boletes. I thought the Boletes may be Slippery Jacks, but they don't have a thin veil on the stem. They may be Kings but the cap seemed a bit light. But the thick stalk does match, as does the stem color. And the taste of them sautéed is incredible.

The puffball tastes okay, not nearly as good as the smooth skinned ones. Still not bad. 20230611_144524.jpg

I think puff balls taste like whatever they are cooked with. I must say I do like them with salt garlic and butter

Got some black staining polypore. I am simmering and reducing to make broth for some onion umami soup

Nice find on our walk in the woods today. Was in shorts and a t shirt so only grabbed what I could get on the trail edge. I'm grabbing my bird hunting chaps and boots a heading back now......from what I saw farther into the thicket I think I can fill a couple of pecks in 1 to 2 hours but ill need the chaps......its a nasty bramble and i got my work cut out for me. They are excellent this year due to the rain. Quite large....Juicy and sweet. Not sure yet if I'll make jam or just freeze them. The ones I got on the first batch will be on top of vanilla Ice cream after dinner. 😁

Biggest COW I have ever seen. Chantrelles also. Shrooms are everywhere with this weather
Similar to 2021 with the higher than average rainfall, this year is the same and while I have a freezer full of choice edibles I haven’t had time to get out there to collect some. I may give the forest a rest. One short walk in my ghillie suit last week due to a crazy amount of skeeters and deer flies I found painted suillus, black trumpets, king boletes, etc. Happy foraging!
