Stumbled across a muzzle brake for a M44 on ebay. I've asked the seller for dimensions to make sure it would fit a M38. Any experience with muzzle breaks on carbine Mosins?

I never seen one, but I'm not sure what's the purpose of it, most people get m38 or 44 to get bigger fireballs and want that kick, otherwise regular Mosin is fine.

bought one for my M38---it did not center around muzzle--i added shims to center it
tightened small bolts and gave it a try----prolly one of the stupidist thing i have ever done
after pulling the trigger both bolts sheared off and the brake was bent at a 30 deg angle
i had to use a zip wheel to cut the bent bolt to remove it. the barrel on a M38 is smaller than an M44
i may be mistaken but i think the flip out bayonet mount was in the way also on the M44
i called the company that sold them and let them know about the barrel diameter problem
do not buy it

did you ask your buddy to hold your beer when you did that? you knew enough to recognize the brake was off center, and you were mechanically inclined enough to shim it - good work. But then you still pulled the trigger?

There is a guy,Roscoe world that does that kind of work.I was going to send my rifle to him after I had Benko from Gartman arms put the scope mount on.I had asked Benko if he could do the work, but he told me you had to pull the barrel off,and in other words a long job. So I told him to just do the scope mount. Well when I went to pick up the rifle, he had a muzzle break on it. So what can I do but pay for it, and off to the range I go. Any time I have work done to a gun,and take it to the range I tie it to the bench with a rope on the trigger, stand back and pull.Well when I did this with the mosin the break went for a ride. One of the members found it a week latter about 100 yards down range. The break was not threaded on.This what the break looked like.

may be it's the photo, but the break does not even look straight on.

Glad you turned out all right. Could have been a lot worse.

First of all, holy shnikees.

Secondly, I agree. Could be just the photo, but considering the results...

Don't do it!!! I was going to have one put on my machinegun barrel mosin, but 300$ for a legit brake wasn't in the cards (custom to the barrel by a reputable smith) The recoil bothers me after a hundred rounds or so, I even put a rubber but pad on, which helps with the length as im a bit tall, and that stock is just short.... Does nothing for recoil...
