Not again.

I picked my brand new from the factory S&W 22A-1 on Thursday and took it to the range with my girlfriend tonight.

Something was not right about the rear sight, but I didn't think much about it until I got there and had to adjust it significantly to get my point of impact where my point of aim was at 30 feet.

When I say "significant", the elevation was maxed out and I could maybe turn one more click. There are 12 clicks per revolution and 5.5 revolutions total. That means that with the gun sighted in at 30 feet I could literally only adjust the sight 1 click down and 64 clicks up. At 30 feet this isn't normal is it?

Furthermore I had my windage adjusted all the way to the right. It could go no further. The spring inside the sight was fully compressed.

I'm wondering if someone from S&W is playing a joke on me as my M&P's front sight drifts on it's own and I still need to send that gun in for repair. That gun was brand new as well.

The positives:
It's a great looking gun. The groups were great both off hand and using the shooting bench. Really fun gun to shoot. My girlfriend loved it and she hates guns.

If any of you have this gun, if you wouldn't mind comparing the pics I've taken to yours that would be appreciated. I want to know if what I have is "normal" or if S&W's QA has just really gone down the sh*tter.

The rear sight from the back. Looks slanted huh? I thought it was my mind playing tricks on me at first.

From the top you can see that the sight is actually at a bit of an angle. The gap at the bottom right is bigger than the bottom left. You can see 2 raised edges on the right of the sight. The sight is definitely touching one of these raised edges. There are no raised edges on the left. The left side of the sight actually hangs off the slide a little whereas the right side does not (Not the adjustable part but the fixed part of the sight)

With the rear sight removed you can see the right side has those raised edges which seem to be filed down on the left side.
You can also see that the hole they tapped for the elevation adjustment screw is not centered in the slide and is offset to the left.
It's hard to tell from the pics just how far off it is, but if you hold it in your hand and simply look down at it you'll notice immediately that something is just not right.

Another pic of the hole that is off center. Again pics do not do it justice. It's very easily recognizable in person.

The amount of adjustment needed for my windage to be correct. (See the blade on the bottom. The spring is fully compressed and cannot go any further)

I'm a little sick of S&W right now.

In case it's not clear......... The raised edges/lumps De's referring to:

And the effect those lumps are having on the rear sight not being centered:

I will say though, that aside from the rear sight issue... the gun shoots like a dream. Nice groups... no malfunctions while I was shooting it... and it ate 2 different brands of ammo with no issues.

Too bad the gun came through that way. You know what you need to do. Call CS and get the free shipping label. Then send it back. That is poor workmanship on S&W's part. It's stinks to go through the bother but you'll be glad you did after it comes back.

I took a quick look at my 22a. Yours definitely has more pronounced bumps on the right hand side.

Thanks for confirming. Does yours have any on the left side?

Is your sight centered, crooked, adjusted almost all the way in one elevation or windage?

Update: The gun is being sent back to S&W.

This gun goes to Maine for some reason.

S&W is going on vacation starting next Thursday the 24th until after the new ear.

Hey, maybe you'll get in under the wire, before the Christmas break. I love S&W CS. I called last Monday to order a 51 cent front sight pin fpr my 617. They sent it free and I had it in Thursday's mail...three days.

They will make it right, just follow the procedure and enclose a detailed explanation. I have your model (no problems) but also have a 625JM that had feeding problems with the clips. No matter what I did, or how hard I tried, the moonclips just would not feed without a lot of "jiggling". I mean a lot. All S&W moonclips.

Called S&W CS and explained the problem. Gave detailed info including brands and config. of all ammo tried....all .45 ACP. Told them that other than the warranty issue, I also wanted a trigger job done.

They sent me a pre-paid label to ship the piece to them. Received a secondary mail to authorize the non-warranty work. Piece came back to me better than I could have imagined. They obviously "champhered" the charge holes. No more "jiggling". Yes, this is how it should have been direct from the factory....but they took care of it. Now all moonclips just drop right in...no "jiggling" involved....other than a bad clip.

The trigger job they did is almost "hair" .....to my feel....on SA....and DA is as smooth as anyone could want. "Surprise" shots are common. Love it. Slick, smooth, and no "grittiness" or "drag".

Total cost to me was $48.00. Yup, I'm a happy camper. Don't be afraid to deal with S&W CS. ***Have your model and serial number handy.

I sent the gun back to them on Thursday of last week and I received the gun back today (Friday).

They replaced the rear sight base. It has none of the "damn lumps" that my previous one had.
I've centered the elevation and windage and will hopefully get a chance to go back to the range for some testing.
