I always loved the reddish wood on AKs. I think it looks bitchin

I did the same thing to mine. The stock must have been super-glued in though. Took forever to get it off.

The 2nd pic quality was very low. Need a better pic to judge. IMO, still way better than the naked woodstock.

I also have a WASR and I stained it with Minmax wood finish and spray several coats of glossy polyurethane.

Here are better pictures, I slightly sanded the stock applied RIT dye,let it dry for a day and applied shellac let that dry for a day then lightly buffed with 0000 steel wool to get the shine out. Removed the blue from the bolt carrier and polished with flix. Now the last thing I need to do is remove the scope mount. Anyone know how to do that?

Nice work! The RIT red dye does a really nice job on Russian style guns.

If you are referring to the scope mount on the left side of the receiver - I believe that is riveted in. So if you drill it out, it should come off, but then you will be left with holes in the receiver. I may be mistaken though.

It looks good. I dig it.

I wouldn't remove the cope mount, even if you don't use it. The romanians put it there, and you may decide that a old-school soviet optic may be fun sometime down the road.

They are riveted into place by three rivets. The rivet closest to the stock is actually shared between your rear trunnion (the tang that your stock mounts into... it's held into your receiver via two long rivets). If you would remove the head of this, you'd compromise your rear trunnion's mounting in your receiver.

Just leave it be. True- the russians never put receiver scope rails on any 7.62x39 rifles except for a very few AKMs their special forces used with night optics, but it won't hurt anything sitting there. Removing it, however, could hurt things if you didn't re-rivet the rear trunnion on your receiver. You'd have to drill out the long rivet and reform another one in it's place.

I dig the stock color. RIT dye has a unique look to it. I would have added iodine to make the laminate layers stand at attention.

I hear what you are telling me, but I have a certain look that Iam looking for and the scope mount is not part of it.I ordered a rivet set but I need someone who knows how to remove and install them correctly.I tried the scope from my PSL on the AK did not care much for it.I almost forgot, I picked up a plum colored grip so I have the black one if anyone is interested in it for thier build, it is a US part.

do realize that you will have 2 holes in your receiver if you do end up removing the scope rail, even if you do button up the trunnion rivet. Those two other scope rail rivets have to go through something besides your scope rail.

If you are going for a "look", it'd be best to build a parts kit on a new receiver. Not only would you have vacant holes in your WASR receiver, but the finish will get beat to hell when you work on it. Romanian black oxide falls off if you sneeze on it, let alone take a drill/grinder to rivets to remove a scope rail.

If you have the know-how and the tools to properly seat a rear trunnion long rivet, you are more than 50% on your way to having the knowledge and tools to build a AKM from the ground up.

Seriously.

This.

Get a Romi G kit and a Nodak receiver to build on. There is no side scope rail and the stocks in most kits are often the dark red-ish color already. Keep the WASR as you have it now and add a PKA for some fun.

Ok, I just had to get this rifle the way I wanted it and that meant removing the scope rail.So I took it down to Greg and his crew at ArmsTec. in Natick they did a great job. Well here it is, it has that clean old school look.

It looks real good.
If you don't mind me asking how much did Arms Tec. in Natick charge you?
If you don't want to say on here a PM would be great.

Thanks,
smitty

you did an excellent job. I like the original alot, but also like what you did. Cant lose with either. So one of each should be good :)
