New .500 Magnum -- compensator question (I bought the 4 inch)

What is the explanation for the two different compensators? I knwo the lead one gets dirtier, is this the reason for no top ports, the slight extra length and the hole with the wrench to help pull it off, or is there anything else to this?

Just curious. I'm home again with a sick kid as the wife goes out Christmas shopping, next stop is the range though.
