I've recently bought a 92FS and a 10/22. Both are new, and they're the first guns I have ever owned or been responsible for the maintenance of.

I want to take them to the range, but before I do that, I want to make sure that I am not missing something. As shipped from the factory, are they ready to take out and shoot, or do I need to do some work on them before I go out - is the packing oil the wrong kind, do they need extra lubrication on certain parts, etc...

Sorry, I know this is a very basic question, but my google-fu has failed me. I can't find any guides or articles on what to do in terms of cleaning when getting a brand new gun. My assumption, therefore, is nothing, but I like to be thorough.

I have a cleaning kit for after I shoot. Is there a guide any of you would recommend to follow to do the maintenance right the first time?

Thanks for your help!

Each should have come with an operation manual. Read this cover to cover, clean and lube per directions and then you should be good to go.

Firearms are shipped with a protective coating that should be cleaned off prior to first use.

Read your owners manual.
Take a good look and make sure the bore is clean and dry
Many guns come from the factory "over oiled" for storage reasons.
To answer you question, would it be safe to take a new gun out of the box and load it up and shoot it. YES but why not take an extra look at things first?

Also, were do you live? you can go to the range the first time with an Instructor if you like and he or she can go over everything and even give you a shooting lesson at the same time. It will be money well spent.

Good luck and welcome to NES.

Sorry, yes, I have read the instruction manual. It goes over post-firing maintenance, but during my searches I found vague references to weapons coming from the factory with heavier oil which needed to be cleaned off. That doesn't seem to be the case here.

Thanks for your help. I can probably make it to the Attleboro range tonight and hire an instructor for an hour of instruction.

My first purchase was a 92FS as well. It came extremely oiled up. I broke it it down, wiped it up, and sent some cleaning patches through the bore. Re-assembled and it was still oozing oil all over the magazine. I brought it to the range and ran 150 rounds throught it. Brought it home and broke it down completely, hosed it down with cleaner, wiped and then (lightly)oiled the slide frame. Gun works flawlessly with zero FTF adnd FTE's after 750 rounds. Shooting nice tight patterns at 12 - 15 yards (if I could see any further than that I would be shooting from it).

Might be money well spent. Stay safe and have fun. My best friends first gun was a 92fs. He loves it and carries it every day.
