I picked up these this past weekend on a whim. I had started reading up on the 380 and thought it would be nice to have a smaller carry weapon when I didn't want to carry the Glock. I had heard about the issues that were present in the earlier ones, but wanted to see one for myself.

First off:

They are much smaller than you think. Photos don't do it justice. I couldn't believe how small it was in person. I'm 6' with fairly big hands and I was able to get a comfortable grip on it without much issue.

I also made sure that mine was a newer pistol with a higher serial number. Mine starts with EAFxxxx. Myself and my friend shot it along with my new to me J-frame, and my standard carry gun, the Glock 26.

Let me tell you I was very impressed! My buddy, who has only shot handguns one other time was grouping 5-6" at ~40 feet with the 380. It was crazy. I am no where near that good. Laser worked well and was right on point after a slight adjustment. I fed it Remington FMJ without any issues and after that day and cleaning I felt comfortable enough to carry it out for a few days without the Glock on my hip. It totally disappears IWB. In the pocket might be a bit different depending on your pants.

The J frame was purchased used and it had Pachmayr "The Gripper" grips on it. I would like to get a set of the wood grips as well. I can't figure out what exact model it is or what year it was manufactured so any help you can give is apprecated. I believe it is a square butt and not a round butt. The serial number starts with J and I can get photos of the other numbers I find. Bluing looked very good (photos are of it once I got it home before I cleaned it) and it didn't look like it was shot very much. I put a box of Critical Defense .38 +P through it, but after hearing it isn't rated for that I plan to stay with standard loads for carry ammo. I shot 100 rounds of standard .38 SPL FMJ through it flawlessly. It shot very nice as well. I look forward to getting some speed strips or loaders and carrying this as well. Looking at a nice Don Hume IWB holster for it.

Being a relativly young guy I always preferred semi-autos over revolvers, but there is just something about a "snub nose" I really like.

Here are some photos I took when I got home after the purchase.

James,

Nice pics. Your J frame appears to be a Model 36 "Chief's Special" (possibly a Model 37 Chief's Special Airweight) but I think the former is more likely. If you open the cylinder you might find the model number printed on the crane area. If you send me the serial number I can try to find an approximate year of manufacture for you.

Thanks, I'll do that when I get home tonight. I was told it is steel and not the Airweight model so I think your first guess may be correct.

Alright, here are all the markings I see. I've changed the last two digits of the serial number in the photo. Trying to figure out exactly what model and year it is. Thanks! Also if i'm correct it is a square butt.

James,

It looks like your M36 Chiefs Special dates to 1975 or so. The other numbers (the 36582) are assembly numbers which S&W used to keep the specific parts of revolver together during the assembly process.

Thanks! It is cool knowing I have something that old that was used before I was born and still in great shape today! I'm now trying to track down a set of wood grips that may have been found on it when it came from the factory.

EDIT: Any idea what the "E11" is for?

And these should fit correct?

The E11 probably has something to do with manufacture and assembly but I cannot say for sure. The experts over at the Smith&Wesson forum probably could. Those grips do look like the right ones for your Chief's Special.

Wait till you get to my age and start playnig with things that are as old or older than you. This S&W shipped the month I was born and it still works great.

It isn't bad. After shooting my other guns my finger gets tired, but it isn't bad. It is a bit awkward because I have such large hands and long fingers though, but even so I enjoy shooting it.

Yep, very long. It is sort of odd being such a small pistol, having large hands, and such a long pull, but it is a very accurate pistol for its size.

I also got this a few days ago. Can't wait to shoot it this weekend. It feels great!! I felt I was missing something without having a .45. I had sold my Kimber a while ago because of issues and am happy to have another 45 in the mix. I plan to carry this monster as my EDC. Just waiting now on the Supertuck I ordered for it.

Nice. I always fround that the big frame Glocks shot nicely but sat (i.e., pointed) too high in my hands. But I recently saw a G21 SF and that felt really nice.
