This morning as I have often done I was lamenting the fact that, while it is an excellent radio, my FTM-100DR does not have true dual receive (separate VFO). I decided to have a look at what prices now were for the FTM-500DR which has been around for a year now, and so I starting looking around the web.
Well I was quickly surprised to find out that Yaesu had just released a new line of mobile VHF, VHF/UHF radios. I noted that these radios are analog only, and not capable of digital mode operation (Yaesu Fusion) like my FTM-100DR.
But I have to tell you that is not a deal breaker for me, as I have two radios, mobile and handheld, capable of Yaesu Fusion digital and have never used the mode on either, anywhere, ever.
The new transceivers are the...
FTM-150RASP 55/50W 144/430MHz FM Dual Band Mobile Transceiver
FT-3185RASP 85W 144MHz FM Mobile Transceiver
FT-3165RASP 65W 144MHz FM Mobile Transceiver
All three have what Yaesu calls Evolving Super-DX and Audio Digital Signal Processor, which is some scheme of digital signal processing to improve weak signal reception clarity.
The one that interests me is the FTM-150RASP because it meets my needs with two VFO capable of V+V, U+U, V+U, U+V operation. It also has a detachable control head like my current FTM-100DR. But as an improvement it has microphone jacks on both the control head and the radio chassis, where as the FTM-100 only has one on the chassis.
HRO has it in stock now at $379.95 but I have to imagine that might drop after the new release hype wears off.
Here is a video (1 of 2) from the official US Yaesu podcast talking about the new release. I have skipped it ahead 5 minutes because this dude really does take a while to get to the point.
