When they are old enough (2028 & 2031) my two son's will each get some of my collection and I want to be fair to each. Assuming they're both good boys 'til then of course...

What would be a Nicer "Heirloom" piece or are they both the same. I'm looking for opinions. They are both in the same approximate condition. [i.e. SAFEQUEENS].

Son #1 (Lefty): Gen2 G19 w/HiCaps

Son #2 (Righty): Sig 228 w/HiCaps

To traditionalist me, a true heirloom piece has more to do with the firearm's history (typically within the family) rather than its book value or anything else about it.

In that regard, I would rather own and pass down a pocket pistol that my great-grandfather carried than a pristine Colt Python with no such history or significance. Just an example, but you get the idea. And the historical aspect doesn't necessarily have to be decades or centuries long, but it should be significant I think.

So the question becomes "Which of your firearms are truly most important and significant to you"? Then it should become easier to decide which of your heirs should get what.

I've never heard of a Glock or Sig being a safe queen. [wink]

I have no children but if I were in your shoes I guess I'd buy a couple nice old .22 target pistols to start each child off the correct way in pistol shooting. Assuming both boys continue their interest in firearms and move on to bigger calibers over the years, save those two old .22 pistols and give them to the boys when they become men. Hopefully they would appreciate, keep, and pass down the first guns they learned how to shoot with.

Heirloom glock or sig doesnt really make sense to me.

Think 1911, colt python, m1 garand, winchester shotguns or rifles, a nice over under or double. or something with sentimental meaning that gains value over time because they dont make it anymore. Something from the days of wood and blued steel to me is where its at. But it depends what your interests are. Thats just my opinion from a guy that has been around guns for 30 years.

My son will get my browning A5 sweet sixteen that i shot my first deer with. In the end he probably will get every gun i own anyway. But thats the one im giving him on his 15th birthday. Its been a safe queen for years, i cant see the sights on those browning buck barrels anymore.

Thanks a lot for the replies. I agree that "Heirloom" usually means something of historic significance and these two don't necessarily qualify as that but just wanted a feel for... if I got a G19 but my "Little brother" got a SIG" would I be mad? Personally I'm a SIG fan so I "Value" the 228 more but Son #1 is a lefty and SIGs de-cocker is mainly set up for rightys...I know that you can ignore it or work it with your index finger. Just thought the G19 is more lefty friendly. They will both have their own 10/22 long before they get these...
