The S&W 22LR AR style rifle isn't too expensive. Why not that instead?

Yeah that's true.

The SR22 is cool but I don't think they make a crippled MA version of it yet. (it does take 10/22 mags!)

It is very cool a buddy has one and it really feels like the real thing. Good for practice - certainly a lot cheaper than shooting 223.
