I read an article that the Chinese police are now carrying 9mm revolver. I was sure it was a reporter who was confused between pistols and revolvers. To my surprise, he sent me these links:

Mass compliant?

I wonder when Harbor Freight will start carrying them. You know they will be cheap.

what's more interesting are the reasons why

MORE than 1,000 police officers now carry guns when on routine patrol in Shanghai as part of a national security campaign.

The city’s public security bureau said the decision to arm officers comes in the wake of the fatal knife attack in the southwestern city of Kunming last month when 29 people were killed and 143 injured.

“Violent crime and the extreme behavior of some individuals have become real threats to public security and people’s safety,” said city police official Rui Minghua.

“From now on, Shanghai police can open fire to stop violent crime if faced with situations like the Kunming attack.”

what about Kung Fu and such? Seriously, if cops are so well trained ... wait, what are they trained in? Jacky Chen was lying to us all along, didn't he?

Reminiscent of the Smith & Wesson 547 9mm revolver. Israel ordered them for the Palestinian police force. They wanted to arm them, but not "too much". The thinking was that a revolver is less dangerous than a semi-auto. In the end, after all that trouble, Israel's IMI knocked them off and cancelled the order with Smith & Wesson. So there are not a lot of them out there (although I do have one and it is a beautiful piece of engineering.).

EddieCoyle wrote great article about this handgun a while back. There were significant engineering challenges to making a 9mm revolver without moon clips.

It's worth a read:

Also the J frame 940 (which used full moon five shot clips). A friend had one. The 9mm did not lose as much velocity in the short barrel as a 38 special did making it like a +p loading for the 38. He carried it in his jacket pocket. The shrouded hammer allowed it to be fired from within the pocket if need be. Not the best video but the guy is pretty much a hoot:

Looks like a rimmed round in the article you linked. Apparently .38 S&W based? That would not fly for a police round here.

I thought it would be an actual 9MM Parabellum revolver, so I was a little disappointed to see that.

Thanks for writing the reporter, I was going to send them a snarky note about their lack of gun knowledge.

At least is not a .9mm revolver....

I was watching a series on martial arts several years ago, and for a while the Chicoms tried to ban Kung Fu in an attempt to completely disarm the population. So no, these cops probably don't know any martial arts.

How is it that the Communists in China have evolved enough to understand that guns will help reduce/deal with crime, but the Communists who run Massachusetts haven't figured this out?

same deal in Soviet Union, you get jailed for Karate and martial arts, unless it was state sponsored Sambo or Olympic Judo.

But we all know this today's communist China is not really communist or at least it's communist acceptable enough to trade with US and steal secrets and whatnot.

Wondering "why"?

To those still wondering "why", I received another link from the WSJ reporter - http://blogs.wsj.com/chinarealtime/2014/04/24/chinas-police-will-carry-guns-unlike-any-others/.

The revolver uses proprietary ammo based on 38 S&W (9x20R), not the usual 9x19. Apparently, the idea is that if a gun falls into the wrong hands, they won't be able to find ammo for it (the only Chinese product that isn't available in Wal-Mart).

I'd love to see a Tueller drill run with it. They use the metric system there so the attacker needs to start at 21 meters, not feet. The gun is DAO, has a manual safety, and is chained to the belt just in case. Check out the photo! [rofl]
