I've got a Ruger Competition MKIII with a 1" UltraDot 4 dot. I've gotten good enough that I can justify a trigger job and want to understand my options.

I want a smoother trigger, but want the gun to be "standard" enough that I can hand it to a student in one of my classes. Is this possible?

I've heard good reviews from the VQ drop in accurizing kit. It includes a half dozen or so parts that are supposed to be drop-in, including a new sear and adjustable trigger. You can just by the sear and trigger individually if you don't want the other parts like the extended bolt release, etc.
I've been thinking about getting the same kit for my MKIII Hunter.
The kit is about $100 at Midway last I checked.

Don't get the accurizing kit... all you need is the sear and trigger. Neither of those changes will be enough to preclude using that pistol for training. Once you start removing the magazine interlock and the loaded chamber indicator, THEN it's no longer appropriate to use that firearm for training.

See this thread for what I've done to mine...

And I second, third, and fourth the recommendation to visit RimfireCentral.com

I put the VQ trigger in mine, and it is very nice. A big improvement. It should not preclude you using it for a class. I believe mine came out a little at 2 1/2 lbs. Very nice, I got it on sale at Midway for about $85

+1 I did the same a few weeks ago. It doesn't require any special tools but putting it back together is sort of like building a ship in a bottle. There are photos online to assist or take your own photos before disassembly.

I also put in the VQ extractor too. You do need a small punch for the extractor pin.
