Out of state long gun purchase and fa10 timeframe...

I'm sure this has been asked/answered before but I just can't find it atm.
After purchasing a long gun/shotgun out of state, when does the clock start ticking for the fa10 "non-registration" ? Is it from date of purchase or from date of bringing the gun into Ma?
