It's light and fast, as opposed to big and slow, like most other pistol cartridges. Some of the loads are designed to go through soft armor, although FN won't sell those to civilians.

The fame of this pistol derives from it's high capacity, high velocity, low recoil, and armor piercing capability.

Many LE organizations are apoplectic over it and routinely call it a 'cop killer' in the hands of civilians (they like it for themselves).

Several states, most noteably NY and MA have attempted to ban its sale.
