I've got a Colt Sporter AR. I'm used to the newer M-4's having the slide pins with the Takedown Pin Detent Helical Spring and Takedown Pin Detent on them.

I want to convert the screw pin to a pivot pin with the spring/pin so I do not have to screw the thing off every time I clean it or change the upper.

I saw there were some larger pin Sporters, but can't find the specs. I measured the diameter of the pin and it's .25 inches or 6mm. It is the exact same size as the takedown pin.

Can anyone tell me where I can get the pin/spring & pin setup? My AR has the tunnel for this, but can't find anything online about upgrading to this.

Thanks a ton,
Johnny

You're saying you want the front pin that allows you to remove upper from lower completely without removing the forward pin, right?

Any parts house should have the parts in stock. I'd try Bushmaster or Midway.

This is the front pin that I want to change the old screw style too...

I would suggest the push button take down pins that can be removed from the lower, I use them in all of my ARs. The captured take down pins need a special tool for installation.

If you call a clevis pin that you can get at any hardware store a special tool, then yes. One of those can be helpful but it's not necessary.

You want to make sure that your lower supports the spring for the detent. Make sure there is a channel for the spring in the fence.
Colt made a number of variations, and just because you have a small hole, doesn't mean you can "plug and play" standard pivot pin.
You can get all the parts at brownells. I would also highly recommend the clevis pin. I did it without it, but I had to look for the detent pin on the floor a few times.

I heard something about non-rotating hammer and trigger pins improving the life of a receiver. Would the same be true for the pivot pins? Just curious.

I ordered the pivot pin and the spring/pin from bushmasters. The pin fits perfect, however the small spring/pin do not fit in the hole in the lower receiver. They are a bit too big. I just emailed bushmasters tech support to see if they have one that fits. Anyone else have this problem and resolve it???

Well, if the lower wasn't designed for it, the hole may not be the proper size. Or, you might have gotten the wrong spring and detent.

Haven't lost a detent yet.

(Yeah, I better order an extra for the next build now... damnit)

The funny thing is that I actually built an installation tool but found the removable pins so convenient that I never bothered to install a captured pin.

Acording to Bushmaster I did order the wrong spring and pin. They have sent off the new ones free of charge. WooHoo...I'll let you all know if they fit, etc...Can't wait, changing uppers is a pain in the behind without this setup...
