Why do you want a brake instead of a flash suppressor?

It's likely that this one is pinned and/or welded, so if you can't get it to budge, don't force it, have it professionally removed.

Look on the bottom ofr the first "ring" where you would put a wrench for a small area that looks discolored or ground up. Usually indicates a pin has been inserted in a hole and then welded over to comply with a states AWB. Only way to get them off is to usually split them in half. AR15.com has a writeup somewhere on how to take them off.

Also, if it is post ban and in MA with a removable hider it means it is threaded and runs afoul of our state laws

From what I can see in that photo, there is nothing stopping you from taking a wrench to that "suppressor" and unscrewing it.

READ!

OP IS MOVING TO VA. MA AWB LAWS DO NOT APPLY.

and YES. a2 birdcage is ideal. only one i know of thats better is the surefire(i think), Vortex if im not mistaken.

well, if he is MOVING to VA, but is currently in mass, the law would still apply to him wouldnt it. If the device isnt permanently attached, it is technically illegal.

he never asked about current legalities, nor did his post a picture of the bottom of the current brake (where you'd typically see the discoloration from a weld if the compensator was pinned). i can only assume that it is (i've never seen a rifle come into MA with a brake that wasnt pinned. (i've seen plenty of post-ban uppers with bayo lugs and birdcages though)

If a manufacturer put a fake A2 muzzle attachment on the end of a rifle, it's likely that they did so in order to make it ban compliant. I'm almost 100% sure this brake is pinned and welded.

I love the Yankee Hill Machine Phantom products:

After you have moved, find a good gunsmith in your new locale and have him remove the pinned break. Barrels are expensive and the last thing you want to do is bugger it up with amateur goonsmithing.

Thanks everyone for the advice. I brought it over to my local gun shop and they showed me how its pinned. Im taking M1911's advice and waiting....not touching it until I move and let an actually gun smith remove it. Thanks again
