Please teach me about 1911's

With the possible 1911 group buy, (link to the members section) I have to admit I know nothing about 1911's. Can someone explain what all the differences are. ie.

Commander/full size frame? Do they take the same magazines?

Tactical/non tactical?

I know what a barrel bushing is, buy why is it always mentioned in a 1911?

Any links that might explain the basic mechanics (not history)of a 1911?

If I understand what I read. This has a full size tactical frame, with a beaver tail, widened ejection port, bull barrel (lack of bushing), front and rear serrated slide, single sided safety, curved trigger and adjustable rear sight.

Is that about right?
