Popped my Gun Show cherry today.

Lol,that may have been true 20 years ago,but not anymore..Even back when I used to go to every show I would see the same dealers with the same overpriced crap year after year.

Yes, those are the dealers who won't negotiate and would rather carry the stuff they paid too much for around from show to show. Its worth mentioning it to them though in your negotiation, tell them you've seen they still have this and you looked at it at show XYZ and how about taking this much to stop hauling it around. Costs you nothing to try.

Yes it's a small show (100 tables) vs. 300 at Concord NH or the 3-400 typical at Marlboro. But if you find what you want at a good price that is what makes a good show and I doubt that you'll find a lot of non-gun vendors at BR&P. And admission isn't an obscene $12 either! Similarly, Holbrook runs a good show (usually May and November), don't know how many tables, but I find it a worthwhile show to attend when I can.
Nothing wrong with small club shows as long as your expectations are realistic. [grin] I did Braintree last year and I'll probably do it again this year if I am not tied up elsewhere. But I am good for almost any gun show that comes along except West Springfield as long as the wife hasn't made conflicting plans.

My only point was that if the OP felt Concord was a disappointment, I don't think that Braintree will be more satisfying for him. Yes, you can luck out anywhere, but the odds are usually somewhat better at the bigger shows.

BTW, Is Marlboro really no bigger than Concord?

lol, I think I saw you in there fitting 5.11 boots with your son.

Yeap that was us, thats my youngest, is only 16 but he looks older, he plays tackle on the High School Football team. I have three, my oldest his an Army Veteran did two tours in Afghanistan has a medic and his now back training to be an opthalmist . His just done his safety course and is about to apply for his LTC in Bellingham. My middle son is an IT specialist in the medical field dealing with New England hospitals.

Boots where a pretty good deal with the 20% off but what was even better is the sales clerk took 20% off the 5 boxes of 556 we purchased as well.

I guess you haven't been going to shows that long because they started sucking before Obama got elected, and the prices and dealers have been getting more tarded ever since.

When I say sucking,I am talking about prices, not selection.

Not entirely true, I got into shooting while in .mil stationed out in CA. CA gun shows are about as useless as CA shake joints. I came home just after 0bama was elected the first time.

I remember going to the Plymouth show after Sandy Hook and it was maddening. Dudes walking around with AR's strapped to their back and a wad of cash in their hand negotiating up on price with dealers. I saw a guy drop $3k at a table on a what would be maybe a $700 carbine today and "preban" beta drum. He was almost out of breath with excitement that got this stuff before "'bama gon' ban it all!" The wife and I just shook our heads and headed down to main street for some beers and wings.

Marlboro is able to accommodate 500 tables, however reports from others over the past few years is that there are "wider" aisles, meaning fewer tables. Concord can barely fit 300 tables max. IIRC Foxboro can hold 300 tables and that is back on the 2016 schedule.

Depends what your looking for. I went Sunday and thought it was a good Show. Was able to pick up 2lbs of sr4759 which is discontinued and can't find it anywhere. Winchester LR primers for $30 a 1000 no tax,I thought good price in these days and picked up a 200rds of NM white box LC M118 for $15 a box again good price. It all depends what your looking for.

Really gun shows are generally or used to be just that. A place for us to take a gander at guns we might not see any other time. Along with other odd items.

So your saying that the only ones who go to gun shows are buy curious?

A couple of Gun Show economic lessons.

1. If a dealer has a spectacular price on an interesting gun, expect one of the other dealers to snap it up before the doors open. LESSON: Buy a table and get in Friday night and Sat am. Sell a few items and be on your way. Downside - you have to be there for 2 days straight.

2. You can't be all places at all times. This is not the stock market. You have to be at a table to see the deal. Meaning the $200 MP-22 will be gone before you get there, as will the $800 triple-lock. People with good deals will likely sell out before you get there. And the guy with high prices always has plenty of guns in stock. LESSON: Get a table. Downside - stuck there for 2 days.

3. The internet brought some efficiency to an otherwise inefficient market. Ditto for most collectibles. Buyers and sellers are approaching more of a "fair" price on items.

4. Confirmation Bias - you only see what you want to see. You see 3 guns you know well selling $20-100 more than they should. You forget the 5 you saw pretty fair priced because you want "a deal". Gun shows were never stocked with table after table of great deals. Way back when didn't exist. It's mining. It's hunting. It's fishing. It isn't called finding or killing or catching for a reason. As Col Cooper once said, "no I didn't get anything. But I was hunting. And that is the joy."

Go spend your $12. Wander around. See what is interesting. Stumble on a deal like you would a buck in the woods. And breathe in the unwashed asses and realize outside of Kablamastan, you won't find anything like this for ordinary citizens in the world. 'Merica!

Dennis,

Some truths here but some problems too.

1. & 2. DOR trolls the shows as they open, if you have a table they insist on seeing a MA Dealer Tax # or will "sell" you one to be legal (twice back in the days that I worked the shows for GOAL I was hassled by them, so this is from personal experience). Once you have that you are obligated to report all sales quarterly and pay the sales tax, forever. They will also expect to see a Sch. C with your Form 1 tax return every year. Promoters also tend to demand that you have an FFL and/or Tax ID before they will rent you a table. Gun club shows are less strict on this. Likewise Carole patrols the show and insist that if you rent a table that you are there both days! IIRC it is ~$85 to rent a table so it's an expensive way to get into the show early.

REALLY!?!?!?!?!?

Do they drive around town in the summer handing the same permit to lemonade stands??? Just seems crazy. "No. I'm just selling some old junk. Like I would do on Ebay. Thought these guys would like it."

"Sorry, Revenuer. Didn't sell anything."

I didn't say it was a GREAT idea. But for those that want deals, they go on Friday night and early Sat AM. We all know the HUGE GS dealers who strangely clean out the small guys every show.

I'm content to wander and on a rare occasion, find a diamond in the rough. Haven't seen one in a while. And I don't care. Another gun. . . . hole in the head. My point is people should breathe in the MERICA and realize this is a rare thing to buy guns like this at some convention center.

Oh, and

5. Really? REALLY!!!!????! It's $50 or $100. Let's say you own the gun for 10 years. Is it worth 5-10/yr to go without? To torment yourself? Per range time, that's like. . . . . . $50 or $100. [rofl] Seriously - think of what you are buying. If it's a rarity and you found it NEAR your buying price, just grab it. I've had too many times I've kicked myself for NOT getting a gun that I should have.

I go to every show I can on the weekends within driving distance. For one, its a pretty good way to see how the regional dealers are handling business, and 2, it makes for an excusable break from turning money into noise.
