I am trying to finalize plans for my saiga308 conversion (decided against the PSL) and I'm looking at optics right now... I am so high speed low drag that I like the idea of a range-finding reticule AND a BDC so the posp scope in 8x is very appealing especially for the price. I am also looking at the Nikon Monarch with BDC for the 308...

My question for the infinite knowledge of this board is: While I understand a BDC is only good for a specific barrel length/cartidge load/ elevation, etc etc etc... Will the POSP be close enough to keep a dope book with my shooting data to remain accurate or is the M-308 from nikon going to be a better bet???

The POSP is cheaper by enough that I am leaning heavily that direction but I know somebody here has an opinion they would like to share

EDIT: what about target turrets? I'm definately no scout sniper so I've never heard of them

Thanks!

What caliber is the POSP calibrated for? Is it 7.62X54? I would suspect it would be pretty close, but not really close enough for precision work and even then, if if you were shooting it for the cartridge it's calibrated for, it's not really a precision optic. Like anything with this stuff, you should not trust it without verifying it.

I shot an ACOG with a lot of different ammo and I just kept a notebook with hold offs. I never shot with the different hash marks on the drop reticle, only the 100 yard cross hair. We zeroed at 300 yards and just shot different sight pictures depending on the distance (shooting on KD ranges). We shot M193 & SS109 and some M855. None of them seemed to work well with the reticle which was supposedly calibrated for M855.

The Kenton knobs are great, but they are more for a scope that you would be dialing. Something with a calibrated reticle, you won't be dialing scope knobs.

I'd get the kenton knobs with the appropriate optic, I was just curious as to my best approach to accuracy on a budget... I think it's probably the 8x posp with a hundred yard zero that is 2-3" high so I am still in the "kill zone" at 300 yards or so

POSP's are neat scopes for the price, just put one on my PSL, unfortunately havent gotten any range time yet. like you said the price is the most alluring part to them, i think i paid $200 for mine shipped.

When I ran the numbers in Sierra's Ballistics program it said to zero about 4 inches high at 100 yards for a 10 inch kill zone. Point blank range was 336 yards.

.30 cal. 150gr. fmjbt @ 2800 fps.

I am looking for a POSP but I heard (from one person) that they were not accurate/reliable. But I like them and wonder if that's true.

The Nikon will be repeatable. If you dial the knobs to make changes when you put them back POI will be right where it was originally. So once you get some dope on Different rounds it will be a matter of dialing the info in. I have no experience with the other scope but I own Nikon Monarchs. I shoot with some guys that love cheap scopes and their excitement over a cheap purchase always turns to disappointment very quickly.

one thing to note about the russian scopes. Is it going to be the side mount type.
If you go with a the scope that is built into the mount they sit VERY high on a standard AK platform. Makes for a piss poor cheekweld unless you have extreme distance between the cheek and center of youyr eye. For t he money I had good luck with mine. not the clearest optics. I ended up buying a low profile side mount with picatany rail.
then mounted a red dot or my nikkon riffle scope dialed in for 100 yards. I have the mount below and its been 100%

As for your drop question. I never had a scope dedicated to a particular cal. I just mount and dial in for 100 yards. anything else I guess at hold overs. Not one for scopes.

as for accuracy of the psop about as good as the platform they where designed for.

It's for a saiga 308 shooting at best 2-3 moa so the POSP is the best bet I believe. My buddies uncle has an unknown distance course(very informal) on his property in vt and I am hoping to make first round hits at the farther targets which are in the 300ish yard range

my PSO (4x mag, very similar to the POSP) is just as rugged and consistent as my leupold mark 4. The reticule is a bit rough in comparison and the light collected is less (it's smaller in diameter) but they're both rugged and hold their zero just fine.

Also, I won't cry any if the PSO gets any marks on it.

I've never heard of any of them being calibrated for anything other than 7.62x54r. There might be some 7.62x39 variants out there, though.

I've heard the POSP BDC is good "for all calibers". I'm sure that they mean that it kinda works for a 7.62x39.... I'm going to go with the 8x posp for the reason of price and it's general "dont F with me" appearance!

Besides the Nikon m-308 is waaaaaay to expensive for a saiga but from doing a little digging, it's definitely what I would put on a .308 bolt action rifle

why is there a $80 difference in price between eastwave/kalinka optics and binocularsmart.com????

http://www.binocularsmart.com/scopes/ak-akm-rifle-scopes-posp-8x42.shtml

I don't care how authentic the scope is but will I be disappointed in quality? They all appear to be solidly built but the savings of $80 makes me think I'll be disappointed

EDIT: doesn't look like binocularsmart is a working site... I keep getting "Bad Request" errors

this. the POSP also has an illuminating ret like the mark 4 LRT IR, which costs about 7-8x more than a POSP. are they NV compatible?

http://posp.ru/ab.html I dont know anything about this company but the prices seem ok ?

also this web site(also former seller of AK stuff. I purchased all my AK side mount kits and optics from them) Has alot of great info on the different scopes. It can be a bit tough to navigate but the info is there.

http://tantal.kalashnikov.guns.ru/

and in case you have not come across this yet, good little read. www.dragunov.net/docs/pso_scope_zero_manual.pdf

Also what are going to be useing for a stock ? I have been thinking of buying a mak 90 thumbhole type wood stock and installing adjustable comb on it to mount on my AK. even with the low mount pb-02 I still need more comb hieght. The strap on comb/cheek pad is still a bit to low for comfortable shooting.

binocularsmart is a vampire site- hasn't been in operation in years.

tantal.kalashnikov.guns.ru is retired. Doug's daughter now has a website (collectors source DSW or some shit) that sells optics rails for AKMs. He no longer sells optics or parts. But he's still a great source of info on everything Soviet AK/AKM over at theakforum.

Eastwave or kalinka are your only options as far as I know, besides gambling with polish exporters in the EU.

I will keep the factory until I get more money (I don't even have the $$$ to buy the rifle just yet.... I have a tax return coming my way this year). I am getting a optics mount tonight to mount the scope on my wasr until I get the .308 and I'll see then just how drastically high the optics sit...

I have overly grandiose plans for this russian bitch, like pulling off the FSB and crowning the barrel (I know some of you are rolling your eyes but I'm just trying to turn it into something unique) and I read a thread about fitting legit dragunov furniture to the saiga308.

This looks interesting as well!
