Hi guys,

Need some braintrust opinions on this one. Just came back from vacation to my office this morning to find to crewmen sweeping up glass. We have large 4x8 double pane storefront glass at the office. From what I heard, the outer pane shattered over the weekend. Looked over security footage. I didn't see any direct impact (like someone smashing it by hand), so I assumed maybe a rock.

Asked someone from the office about it today. They had this picture from the inside. Looks like some impact residue on the second pane of glass. Could this be a small caliber shot? .22 maybe? A rock would have to be going pretty damn fast to leave a radial splatter like that. Office is in Southie.

Maybe a small insect travelling at warp speed was able to break through the first pane only to have his exoskeleton disintegrate against the second pane?
I think a .22 would penetrate both.

Depends on how far away it came from.

My immediate though would have been both panes, but is that the case for tempered glass?

I would suspect you'd find a chunk of the 35-40gr bullet if it was a 22, not just splatter like this. I'd say pellet gun too

I'd guess BB or pellet gun, but if it went through one pane an not the second, the pellet or BB should be resting at the bottom between the 2 panes.

The clean up crew swept away any evidence there might have been, but I'm inclined to agree with people that this was a BB pellet.

Is your business connected to others like in a strip mall? Anyone else have something similar happen?

If it was a pellet and the 2nd pane of glass was really hard the lead pellet could have disintegrated..... ? Although you would expect to at least find a chunk of it, but those
things are pretty tiny... makes a .22 LR bullet look huge.

Did the landscapers come through the day before? I've had some careless landscapers shatter a glass storm door with a rock thrown from a lawnmower or trimmer.

Probably not landscapers kicking up rocks. All hardscape around here. Not a strip mall either. Mixed use district, but mostly multi family. I think you guys nailed it with a soft lead BB shot, most likely from a weak BB gun. Police are going to check street cams.

Here's a bitch of it. The window is 55 x 104", and the glazier said that you can't just replace one pane. Big money and long lead on this one. F whoever did this. I hope the cops get the footage.

That blows. Will your insurance pick it up, or is it even worth it to go through them if they raise your rates?

That's the math we're currently figuring out with our insurance agent. I have no idea if this glass triggers the deductible (assuming it will), and if it is even worth the claim if it does. I haven't received the quote back from the glazier yet, but he was like "oh boy...that's a big piece of glass". I don't even want to know.

One of Prepper's Attack Robins?

I'd venture an aerial attack too. Birds can get drunk on over-ripe poke berries and barnstorm plate glass windows.
He most likely flew away after sleeping it off... with one hellava headache.

I give you, the poke berry...

I've had birds flyfull speed into my bay window. Sometimes it leaves a big mess. Once a bird hit and knocked itself out...It looked drunk when it woke up and tried to fly. Maybe there are pokeberries nearby.

You could also contact a windshield crack repair specialist and ask if he does "Big jobs"...
