It's looking like, by the time I am done building my AR (Summer '09), I'll be out of MA and either in NH or RI.

Because this is the case, I've decided not to neuter my AR, and instead, build it and store it at my parents home in NH (which is where I do most of my rifle shooting anyway) until I know where I'll end up this summer.

Because NH and RI are non-ban states, I'm assuming I can purchase NEW AR 30 rounders and not have to pay the premium that they get for pre-bans in MA. Yes? (edit: obviously I need to buy them in NH or order and ship them to my parents place in NH)

That being said, what kind of NEW AR mags should I be looking for? Is there a particular manuf. that is best overall quality-wise, or will pretty much any mag do the trick?

Can anyone point me in a good place to order some?

Thanks in advance!

thanks guys. Wow, not bad at $15. Window ones at $18. Is it really worth it for the window? not sure how I feel about it.

I assume what I am doing is legal, correct? The only thing that gets interresting is, at some point, I'm going to have to go through MA to get from NH to RI...

Don't take them with you on that trip. Send them to yourself via UPS, FedEx, or USPS.

I figured that I may have to go that route. Either that or completely disassemble the rifle and keep it in one or multiple locked containers?

Negative Ghostrider. If he is truly traveling through and not stopping in MA he is protected by FOPA. And there is no reason to stop in MA if you are going to RI from NH. Just put anything firearms related in the trunk.

At this point, he's a MA resident. Until and unless he becomes a NH or RI resident, I would not count on FOPA through MA.

Thanks, i'll have to do some FOPA research.

Once he has the apartment, effects the address change which cancels out his LTC, and begins the process for his FID/LTC(insert correct permit name here) in RI, he is no longer a MA resident. Why would he transport these things prior to doing that so how is he a resident at the point of transport? He is a resident now, sure. But when he moves he will have already be gone.

At the end of the day, shipping them is better than driving them so he is free to do that.

yes, naturally I'll be taking all of the appropriate steps in my future state to legally posess the rifle before transporting it to that state.

also, it is fair to assume that I will NEVER be allowed to bring the rifle to a MA shoot, correct? (the only downside of owning a non-ban gun in a state that neighbors MA, expecially when you work in MA and are a current member of a MA club)

Once he has a drivers license from NH or RI, then yes, I think he would be fine counting on FOPA. Until then, I would not count on it. Perhaps I'm being overly cautious.

Also, his post wasn't entirely clear to me that expected trip from RI to NH would happen after he had moved.

I believe there are rules for bringing non compliant arms to organized shoots such as CMP/Appleseed.

No post ban mags is one, I haven't had coffee yet so bear with me here - the other might be collapsible stock/flash hider related.

The law is that you can't do it. Large capacity magazines must be pre-ban and the gun must either be a pre-ban gun or in post-ban configuration.
