hey fellas, first time on a forum so bare with me. I’m getting a nice inheritance present from my wife’s grandmother , a Preban ‘94 olympic arms sgw car-ar AR15, I’m sure I didnt write that out correctly but I would guess you know what I am referring to.
I’m not a huge fan of the carry handle that comes with this era of AR’s. I was looking for suggestions on uppers to fit my new gun. I do like the rails and all the gizmos that can be added with the feature. But I’ve been looking around, floating between a few websites, and cant really find an upper that says for sure that it will fit my gun. Maybe this is the universes way of telling me to appreciate the inheritance but any suggestions/links would be greatly appreciated as well as if you have any pros or cons you can say about the gun. My first AR as well

Your wallet is in for a world of hurt.

But seriously, you're asking strangers to choose your next car. Your best bet is to shoot your rifle a bunch of times and get a feel for the mechanics and some of the things you like/don't like. No one upper, or configuration, will do everything you want it to do. You'll have to ask yourself what you want out of your rifle. Do you want a precision gun? Competition, range fun, SHTF, truck gun, self-defense/PDW, etc etc? Go play around and you'll answer your own questions pretty quickly. Or do what most people do and buy multiple ARs. Like I said, start saving your pennies.

Thanks for being so quick. I’m brand new to AR’s so I thought that for some reason since it was a preban i would have to find older uppers. I didnt know it was versatile across the years and I can literally mix and match. I’m gonna use it for hunting predominantly.
What is all the hype of a preban versus a current AR about? Is one better to have?

You will no longer find an upper without a carry handle that will fit your rifle. (Daniel Defense used to make one but I can't find any on the market). So you can use an adapter that adapts between your lower and modern flat top uppers

There are a couple ways to do it:

Front Offset Pin, f/Colt Large-Hole Lower & Small-Hole Upper

Colt Receiver Adapter Offset Bushing

You can also get a small hole upper mate it to the lower and drill out the smaller hole to the larger diameter. I have done this in the past ans while it leaves the wall of the lug on the upper very thin I had no problems whatsoever. I then got a nice push button pin to hold it all together.

Preban allows you to have an adjustable buttstock, threaded barrels and flash hider on your rifle in Massachusetts.

Well I’m in Texas. How I wound up here(Mass forum) I don’t know. Does this offer any benefits for those of us in not so strict States? Seems like everyone has adjustable buttstocks, threaded barrels, and flash hiders down here. I’m not too informed on what preban really affected and where. Please excuse my ignorance. Thank you for information so far. I will be looking into your suggestions

yeah it should be fine, just put any upper on it. Colt was the one who did non-standard front pins. I have an Eagle Arms pre-ban from that era and I can put whatever upper I want on it and have.

Check out Bear Creek Arsenal, they have lots of uppers for good prices.

Also, Midway quite often puts an AR Stoner carbine upper on sale for about $200 that's a no-brainer. In fact right now they have a full carbine kit with that upper for pretty cheap...

If the rifle doesn't hold any sentimental value you could sell it to someone up in MA/CT and the money you get would buy 2 new ARs that you could have one setup for plinking and other more precision setup. Right now is the best time to buy AR prices are dirt cheap.

My wife would gut me if I did do that. The gun laws up there confound me. I don’t understand why the States up there restrict firearms in the manner that they do. Although if my wife is okay with it i wouldn’t mind helping a person out up there if it gives them more freedom to modify their gun how they choose
