Preservation Tips?

Anyone have any info on preserving freshly killed game/meat/animals without refrigeration(I'm thinking in a hiking and camping-bare bones scenario)? Links and info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
 
Without canning wouldn't that leave just drying and salting as options ?
Not trying to be obtuse, just looking for more info as to how you want to do this.
 
Smoking is the most viable method in a survival type situation, IMHO. Tastes great if done well, lasts for a year or better, and the actual facilities to do such a thing require some space and effort to construct, it can be done without an excess of tools or professional skills. Once my better half and I move off of our quarter-acre place here in town and out to "the country" the first thing I'm going to build is a nice meat smoker. [grin]

These links should come in handy - I'd also recommend this book that contains detailed instructions, plans for various smokers, and many other different points of interest on food preservation.

Since people have brought up smokers...anyone on here have a smoker and want to provide recommendations?

If you're ever close, and want to learn how to smoke foods, let me know. We'll spend the better part of a day or more going over that. Depending on what you're wanting to smoke, it can be 30 minutes to 30 hours.
 
I would suggest making biltong, at least with some of it. I've always liked jerky in various forms and these videos are a great place to start
