I have a Bushmaster AR-15 that I purchased new last fall, and I haven't fired it yet. But after field stripping it a few times trying to learn about it, I can't seem to get the bolt to lock back in place (I've tried it with and without an empty mag with same result). I believe the bolt release works ok, and I've watched a few videos on youtube to see if I'm doing it right. Any suggestions because I don't seem to see an error on my part. But I could be very wrong and missed something important. Any suggstions or hints? Thanks in advance.....

If there is no mag in, it won't hold back automatically, you need to press down on the bolt release lever while pulling back on the charging handle to lock it

To lock the bolt back, Press inward on the BOTTOM of the bolt release as you retract the charging handle. When the bolt is withdrawn far enough,You'll feel the bolt release drop into place.

+1 on the above two suggestions if it won't lock abck without a mag.

If it doesn't lock back with an empty mag, check the follower to see if it's making contact (or not binding), with the inner part of the bolt release and/or try a few other mags.

If there's still a problem it could be as simple as lubing the release, or if a weak/broken spring, replacing it.

(edit... posted floor plate when I meant follower).

If it isn't locking back with an empty mag you might have a bad mag. Try replacing the mag spring and floor plate and you should be good to go.
