Does anyone use QD scope mounts and regularly take them off? Curious what, if any, change in zero may show up.

Ive only done a little testing so far but it seemed fine

I do, but only for my range toy carbines etc. like my AR-22. a lightweight 5.56 carbine, and an air rifle. For those purposes I'm not seeing a change in zero though I am careful to remount in the same position and ensure that the scope is pushed forward in the slots before clamping tight. I would not use them for a match rifle.

Makes sense. Im trying to decide what scope will go on the rifle, long term itll probably be my mk5 3.6-18, but I was playing with my lpvo on it today and didnt see a huge shift. Made me curious about if anyone had better experience with it.

Using both a larue QF 104 and 204 mount. I threw some flipup irons on there too for fun, figure if I put a QD on might as well have those. They got minute of man zeroed lol

I have one lpvo mount with a QD system

I’ve never taken it off. Gun is my primary AR.

Thought it would be a good idea incase it fails.

Was going to put some BUIS on it (still in the pkg)

as the platform is 5-6 years old. I kinda regret the thought process

While absolutely valid. Unless it’s the shtf and I’m dragging it over rocks. A fixed mount with no backup is probably going to be just fine and less weight.

This would be the build I’d bring as is.

That was basically my thought process foe the first, then I needed an odd size for the second and the larue one just happened to be QD. I kinda regret getting that one instead of a Badger but w/e. Its not a bad set up, I just need to test how far the zero will shift if I take it off and on a few times I guess. 3 sights on 1 gun may be overkill 🤷‍♂️

Most should return to zero to 2-3 moa. No evidence to prove otherwise

I’m getting tired of heavy guns.

Badgers are really nice.

Problem with buis, is that more scopes sit over them so unless you can ditch the scope, the rear buis is useless. They pair better with red dots.

Get an offset buis if you really think you’ll need it.

You asked about an rmr, that’s another solid option for a 45deg offset back up, and light weight also.

I have an AR-10 that has ok accuracy at ~1MOA with a SPHUR mount. Taking that into account, I did try removing the scope a couple of times and did not notice POI shift at 100 yards. Really no way to discern at 100 since any shift would be hidden in the noise. Any error due to slop in the rail is small ... but there were no gross shifts noticeable.

Those things are $$$$ but very nice. It would be on the heavier side.

None of this is about buying, just curious about shift.

The BUIS only seem useful because it has the qd mount. Realistically the rmr is the back up, but the magpul sights have like no weight to them

Already have all 3 on the 1 gun

With that set up, have to ask why you’d take it off?

the 1-2 times I’ve taken one off, I don’t think I needed to re zero.

But these are mostly combat guns, not long range so ymmv

Generally I wouldnt, but I might put my lpvo back on to take a class with it then put this back on. I zeroed the lpvo today, wasnt too far off from where it was on my other rifle, and didnt seem to lose much zero when I out this back on but one time isnt good data

You switched rifles?

That might be a bad data point. Or I miss read the above.

RIfle 1: lpvo
Rifle 2: leopold

Took both off, zeroed lpvo on rifle 2, took lpvo off and checked leopold on rifle 2. Lpvo is just sitting on my desk

Rifle 1 now has no optics on it

I’d never trust swapping optics between guns.

Way way too many variables

But to take one off and re install it on the same gun, same rail position is pretty safe.

A reliable AR-10 that spits at 1MOA is really good IMHO. Heavy isn't really a problem with the way I would use an autoloader .308.

After I swapped barrels I got 1 moa at 200 yards on my .308 M5 build.

So a 1/2 moa gun.

Gun unfortunately weighs 13 ish lbs.
