Specifically THIS one. Can I just head to the range with my 5.56 rifle, shoot .223/5.56 all day and then slap this 9mm upper on with correct mags and shoot 9mm?

Do I need a different buffer and/or buffer spring? If so, do those drop right in to a 5.56 stock?

You would need 9mm magazines (usually UZI mags) and a magazine well adapter. Some mag well adapters require you to modify the UZI mags, however there is one out there that will allow you to use un-modified UZI mags. *** You probably want to stick with some variation of UZI mag for your set up given that pre-ban high caps are relatively easy to come by ***

You will also need a 9mm buffer, they are a bit heavier than a .223/5.56 (it will just drop in)

You may or may not need to change out your hammer. A standard DPMS hammer will work with the CMMG bolt. Some others will not.

FWIW - I LOVE MY 9MM AR [smile]

Yeah the one I posted uses a standard 5.56 hammer, hence why I like it.

So I would want to order the upper, buffer, well adapter, and mags and i'd be ready to rock?

Now, how do us MA folk handle things like FA-10s....or do you? Could you change your rifle to by caliber - multi?

Strat, you should email Spike directly with your questions. From my experience, their customer service is excellent and they'll get right back to you.

Definately gonna need a 9mm buffer. The standard carbine buffer is way too light for the blowback action of a 9mm AR. Luckily you can run the 9mm buffer with your .223 upper with no problem (except lowering the cyclic rate but not an issue unless it's F/A). The 9mm buffer weight is in the middle of the heavy buffers.

Also you normally want to avoid the .223 hammer and use a 9mm hammer due to clearance issues with the bolt but it sounds like the CMMG bolt is designed for it. Not a big problem anyway since the 9mm hammer works fine in a .223 semi as well.

Probably not ........ Standard DPMS hammer YES, other standard hammers or 9mm hammers MAYBE, MAYBE NOT. I have a CMMG ramped bolt in mine and they recommend the DPMS hammer.

Yes, plus dealing with the appropriate hammer.

If the lower has already been registered on an FA-10 there is no need to file another. If it is a new build just register it in the first configuration that it is built as, swapping uppers (calibers) does not require you to refile an FA-10.

I have a 9mm upper for my M16 so I don't need to change the hammer. If I wanted to use my upper on an AR15, I'd have to install a 9mm hammer in addition to the mag well addapter and the 9mm magazine. All I know about Spike's is that I sent him 2 emails to order a .22 upper and I never got a reply.

The hammer issue has to do with the bolt used in the 9mm system. If it's a colt-type 9mm system then a standard AR-15 hammer will work but is not recommended. What happens is that the top of the hammer will hit the inside top of the bolt eventually causing damage to both the hammer & bolt. The top of the 9mm hammer is shaped differently to avoid this problem.

If you do a search on AR-15.com for 9mm hammer you'll come across all the pictures you need to see why not to run a standard hammer in a 9mm AR UNLESS the bolt is designed or modified for it.
