I will soon be looking to purchase a NIB Sig P229 in 9mm. I have a few questions that some of you may be able to answer.

1. what should I expect to pay for this pistol (New not used)? (1st place I plan on looking is Northeast Trading co. in attleboro, 2nd would be maybe Bass Pro shop, and 3rd would be Four Seasons - FS would be 1st if it was not for the distance)

2. Is this usually an easy to find pistol or is there a waiting list?

3. Does anyone have any other south shore dealers that I could probably find it in stock and at a decent price? (I've done business w/ Middleboro gun shop, Archer arms (carver), Fairground trader (Brockton) and Northeast Trading Co. (N.Attleboro)) and I prefer Northeast Trading Co.

1. New you should expect to pay between $700-$800 now because just about every Sig 229 comes with night sights now which bumps the price. Used you may get one for $600-$700. Watch the forum for the best deals.

2. This gun is in high demand but also high production. You will find it without too much patience. Try Four Seasons. They often have good prices on new Sigs. You will pay through the nose at Bass Pro. Northeast trading company is cosmically due for a lightening bolt to come crashing through so I wouldn't want to be around there...Call Four Seasons, ask Carl if he has one in stock. If he doesn't he'll get you one within a few days. In the end you'll pay a little more than somoe places and a lot less than most. But, you'll have met Carl, and since this is likely your first purchase, this is a good time to meet the man you'll be giving a large portion of your income to.

haha I was wondering how long it would take for that to come up in this thread. Obviously not long.

I think Four Seasons would be the best bet. I doubt NET would outdue FS price wise.

just call the 3 places and see who is cheapest, then weight that against how far you want to drive.

I bought a P229 in 9mm as my first gun almost two years ago now at Four Seasons.... I think i paid $709 brand new. No night sites.
I'm not sure what the prices are like now.

I was lucky that I walked in the store to check it out when I did. As I was looking at it, someone called and asked if they could hold one for later....However, the one I was looking at was the last one in the store, and I wound up taking it.

Good luck and enjoy your possible purchase....I know I've loved mine.

that surprises me about Northeast trading co. I have had great experiences there.... but the most recent was probably 2 years ago. has it changed hands or have i just been lucky?

The issue is not how he treats customers to their face, it is who he decided to jump into bed with when there was money on the line. He did nothing illegal or against the "rules" if you will, but what he did do was considered immoral by those who oppose the draconian and ineffective laws (more rules since a lot of the crap is AG whim) here in MA.

P229s are easy to get new in MA. FS or any other decent shop will have them, or should be able to get them; barring any of the obama gun buying frenzy stuff. (It goes a lot further than I thought, it has depleted inventories of guns beyond just AKs and ARs...)

Frankly, though, if you just want a 9mm, and you don't need the silly rail, I'd go looking for a halfway decent used P228 instead. The slide is lighter on the P228 and IMHO they generally handle better. Your odds of getting a better SA trigger on a P228 also seem to increase, as well. (Both of my P228 SA triggers are best described as "wonderful"; my P229's trigger isn't bad, but it's not as good as the P228s that I have... )

I have no idea why, but the newer P series handguns often tend to have marginal SA triggers- I find often that the SA just seems like it is too heavy, although whats funny is it seems to vary from one production run to another. It also bears mentioning that competent gunsmiths that understand the P series can probably improve the trigger, but some of these tend to be few and far between.

For full disclosure, I am kinda biased- the P228 is the only DA/SA handgun that I own TWO of. Over SigSauer's history, IMHO the P228 was one of their brand-defining products, like the P220 and P226. The P229 is a fine firearm, too, but it was really conceived to deal with the added pressures of .40 S+W (And later, .357 Sig) The 9mm version is great, but the only reason it exists is because SigSauer (USA) wanted to reduce their overhead- the P229/9mm requires less tooling and non-identical parts to produce on a modern production line. (For example, the P229 slides are milled and all 3 calibers come from the same blocks of steel, the 9mm just has a different breechface cut and some extra steel removed to reduce the weight from
that of the .40/.357 slides.)

I agree with Mike. I like the 9mm P228. I do have the P229 but in .40 which is also a great gun. I like the "older" style of the P228 and I really like to roll pin style breech block. Good thing is there are tons of preban 228/229 9mm mags around.

I was just looking at the P229 in 9mm at FS yesterday, as a matter of fact! I'm thinking of getting one and they had a few in stock, all with night sights at (IIRC) $779. I was originally going to get the 40, but had heard the recoil was more "snappy" than the 9mm from several people, and this being my first handgun, I thought the 9mm would be easier to handle as a carry/home defense gun. The comments on the 228 are interesting...perhaps I'll do a little digging and see if any turn up.
