Question for Ruger SR9C Owners

I am brand new to this hobby - in fact, I just purchased my first firearms today; a Ruger SR22 and a SR9C. As I was going through the instruction manual for the SR9, the manual states that I should be able to "rack the slide" to cause it to slide forward and close. Unfortunately, my gun doesn't seem to be doing that! When the slide is open, I insert a magazine, and pull the slide back more to let go, the slide doesn't slam forward, the slide release switch catches it. I can pull the slide back and manually pull the slide release switch down, but to be honest, its an awkward maneuver since the spring on this gun is very stiff.

Am I missing something? I don't have actual ammo in the gun, so I don't know if that somehow makes a difference, but if anyone has this handgun and could give me a hint, I'd appreciate it!

Thanks.

Yes, that is the difference. When the mag is empty, the slide locks back and you can't rack it. When there is ammo in the mag, you will be able to rack the slide and it will work just like the manual says.

Welcome to the sport. The SR9c is one of the best handguns out there OOB.

Great! Thanks for the quick reply. I figured it was something along those lines but couldn't find it in the manual.

Ive always wondered how this works. Whats going on mechanically to keep the slide open when there are no more rounds left? Anyone have any links? Did a quick search and didnt find anything .

Yup, that's how the sr9 is. It'll loosen up after ~500 rnds but I prefer the slide release to be stiff and you have to use two hands to rack it.

This. My SR9c is one of my favorite guns and I carry it 75% of the time. It is kind of stiff but it will loosen up a bit. Upon having an empty mag the gun will not go into battery unless you release the slide by pressing the slide lever. My Glocks are the same way so it is not a big deal. The SR9c and SR22 are excellent first guns, you made a great choice with those. Enjoy.

Just curious, when you bought your SR9C, did it come with one or two magazines? Mine only came with one, but I thought I'd read somewhere that it was supposed to come with two?

I believe the magazine follower presses up on the slide stop/release lever when it is empty of bullets.

^ Yes, this is how it works.

I'm not a fan of using the slide stop as a release. It would probably last a long time before it wore down enough to stop working, but I can't stand when it doesn't lock back after the last round and don't want to risk it. If you're just dry firing, you only have to pull the slide back a little to reset the trigger. If you're just trying to make the cool "chk-chk" sound, you'll have to take out the mag [grin] (or hold the slide stop lever down while racking).
