So as I have been looking around for a 1911 (and I did find one that I picked up) I noticed the 1991A1 by Colt. Are these the same as the 1911 just been renamed when they came out with them? My understanding is that they are the same and are series 80, they just decided to go with a different name when they introduced them? What is a good price for one? Ive see some priced the same prety much as the 1911's so I was kind of curious about them.

Thanks,

1911A1 is the updated version of the 1911. That happened back in the 1930's. I'll leave it to others here to tell you the technical differences between the two.
I think every new 1911-style pistol is actually a 1911A1. Everybody just calls them 1911's because it's easier.

The OPs reference to the "1991A1" rather than "1911A1" is not a typo. Colt used that model designation for one of their series 80 1911's.

As Rob said the 1991 model is the same as Model 80's. I have two, a Government and a Compact. Finish is matte parkerized or dull blue. I've seen a few around the $600 range in Mass.

Think of the 1991A1 as the "value line" of the Colt 1911. Standard no dot sights, rubber grips, Parkerized instead of blued... etc... When they were first released, the price point was well below the other Colt 1911 offerings. The one I had was stone reliable, had a good trigger, and fed any factory load I put in it, including hollow-points with no modifications. I still regret trading mine off.. And yes, it does use the Series 80 firing pin block system, and I don't know if I got lucky, but mine had a very good trigger. When I purchased it, the FFL I went through was a 'smith that built custom 1911's for competition, and he was impressed with it for a factory trigger on a no frills gun.
