A few months ago I picked up a Uberti Remington 1858 .44 percussion revolver and an R&D Conversion Cylinder to .45 Colt. I have now put many 100's of rounds through this gun and feel comfortable in sharing my experience for those who may be interested in this type of thing. First of all; it works. In fact it works very well. The cylinder goes in and out of the frame easily and functions flawlessly. The real surprise, for me, was that it is the most accurate handgun I own or have ever owned. It is an absolute tack driver. I load a 200 gr. RNFP lead bullet over 6 grs. of Trailboss. This revolver is not a good set up if you are max load kind of guy. Pressures have to be kept low. That being said this baby will clang a steel gong loudly at 50 yards. At 25' it can shoot quarter sized groups if the shooter does their part (which means only on rare occasion for me). If there is any downside it would be that the cylinder has to be removed for reloading and as it gets dirtier the empty cases have to be knocked out with a rod of some sort. I do not mind this.
As a side note I was watching a re-run of one of the early Bonanza's the other day and there was a scene where this guy is shooting a Remington at a tin can then drops the loading lever, takes out the empty cylinder, reaches in his coat pocket and takes out a loaded cylinder which he quickly puts into the frame. Very cool IMHO.
So that is my experience. I certainly do not know that all R&D Conversion Cylinders function as well or that other model percussion revolvers function as well. I do know that I have a winner and I love it.
