I'm very interested in checking out the 600 yard range at Reading R&R - by any chance are there any members on this board who would be willing to show me around and possibly sponsor me?

I'm a former Marine with multiple rifle expert awards and was a range NCO for over a year. I promise that I won't embarrass you.

I applied there twice. Both times I had references from members of the club. Also my dad is a member there. I have yet to get a call from anyone there about when I can join. I did get a call from someone there trying to get me to attend a class before I could be a member. Once I told them I already had the class under my belt, my contact from them ceased. I guess they only wanted my money. I was later told by one of their members that they didn't want any new members that weren't serious shooters. So I went elsewhere.

I am glad though as in retrospect I would not have gotten from them what I want which was use of the 600 yard range. Essentially it is not a dedicated600 yard range but rather, a berm and shooting spots back at 200, 300, 400 (I think) and 600 all in line with each other. If you want to shoot @ 600 and there are people shooting at 200 you can not shoot the 600. I was told there is a tourny almost every weekend which means I couldn't get out to practice there until the tourney was over. And then no one else would have to want to shoot at the closer ranges.

I ended up joining Harvard and using the 300 yard range. It doesn't have the challenge of the 600, but it has always been available to me whenever I wanted to use it.

Seems reasonable, after all it is a rifle club.

I'm OK with that. (This is the setup at every other range I've ever shot at.)

Maybe I could just ask them to duck? [wink]

Thanks, maybe I'll check out Harvard too. MRA is also on my list. I'd still like to check out Reading though.

TackDriver, I really have to disagree with your assessment of Reading R & R. Yes, it takes time to join the Club. Yes, You have to be patient. No, The club does not care about just taking your money. No, the Club takes all members...not just "serious shooters". Yes, they have an active rifle match schedule on weekends, but there's plenty of time to work around that.

Please name what other Ranges, That have dedicated 600 Yd Ranges without shooting over 300 and 200? No Private Clubs that I know of? Reading has a true across the course range set -up. How do you think it doesn't meet your requirements? BTW, if you want to shoot at 600 and there is somebody shooting at 200 or 300....there is a process to follow, so that you can get your 600 shooting in. At the new member orientation, that process would be explained.

Often in today's society We expect instant satisfaction. Topics involving "GUNS" often don't give that satisfaction, Too Bad, thats the way it is in Massachusetts.

Perhaps, Reading mishandled your application process? Maybe, you should have stuck with it? Many members "Sucked- it up" and dealt with the process and are now shooting 200, 300 and 600 Yds...20 minutes from Boston.

Good luck with Harvard. They have a nice Club. They don't have 600 yds though.

JasonS, MRA is a nice club, they don't have 600 either.

JasonS, PM Me, I'll get you into Reading Rifle, just be willing to "Suck-it up" thru the Application process (it takes a little time..as noted above).

JasonS,
I too am a member of Reading(30yrs) we do take a while to bring members in(took me 2 yrs). We are looking for quality memebers. As DPS said it is the only 600yd range in the state...I know of no other place anywhere that has a dedicated 600yd range. Most of these ranges have multiple firing lines, 200, 300, 500 and 600yds.
Please contact us, we would be happy to show you around.
