So down the rabbit hole I go again. I have a Remington 700 varmint barrel in 243 Win that I got in trade about 15+ years ago. It’s early 90’s Remington mfg that a friend obtained new. Nice laminated stock, beautiful blued action that is buttery smooth. Probably the smoothest Rem action I own. That’s the good news.

The bad news is the prior owner was not much for cleaning his rifles. The rifle bore was a piece of garbage. Even with JB bore past and lapping barrel was still ugly when scoped. It shot ok ( sub moa with hand loads). I took one buck and a few coyotes with it, but after playing with it a bit it really just sat in vault these past years

So last week the stock came off, and I added pillar bedding while added in PTG bottom metal to take AICS mags. Today I stripped the barrel action down and removed the barrel. So now it is just a bare receiver.

Going to set this up for one of grand sons, so either 6.5 CM or 308 win. Not sure yet, but will decide then order barrel

Were i you, i would go with 260 Rem. It is a great all purpose round and relatively mild shooting.
I'd agree with you, but only if the shooter is a handloader. There ain't a dime's worth of difference between the 6.5-08 (260 Rem) and the 6.5 CM, but good luck finding 260 ammo unless you load then yourself.

It used to be very common. I only handload at this point so i am not familiar with commercial availability of most calibers. I guess the 6.5 is the hot trend but will it be around in another decade? Or will it become a lead balloon?

The big difference between the two is the twist rates in factory rifles. Great article on the subject.

Of course if you really want to put a cherry on top of the sundae, Ackley Improve the 260.

Right, but you can buy a 6.5 barrel blank in whatever twist you want, then chamber it to whatever caliber you want.
I'm with you; I have a lot of love for the 6.5-08, but I'd hate to have to rely on finding factory ammo for it.

P.S. a rifle chambered in 6.5 Swede is never the wrong answer, either.
