Might it be possible to "ignore" a forum? Off Topic, specifically? I get tons of value from NES but lately there are prolific and redundant steaming garbage threads that are choking off the new posts and old post bumps for gun and shooting related threads. It would be awesome to simply shut that off via filtering out Off Topic.

Perhaps don't look at or read it?

A work around is the filters in the top right corner. Change the filters to what is least likely to be posted. Polls only in off topic would yield little results.

After over a decade on here, the Off Topic forum goes in ebbs and flows. There are some off the wall threads on there but the collective knowledge of of the forum participants is really worthwhile. I just ignore the particular threads.

How 'bout I simply go there to troll all the whack jobs posting nonsense that belongs on some idiotic platform like Facebook or Tiktok? Start shit and get the threads shut down? Maybe that's the solution.

At any given point in a day, of the top 10 threads or so there might only be one that is gun related. We may as well call this the Wu Flu forum- that crap just won't die and for example there are at least two threads on ' vax sudden death'. That crap could at least get dumped into a single thread- though I would prefer that ANYTHING covid related gets dumped into a single thread. Think of it like opening up email and the spam ratio is 10:1 and you don't have a spam filter. Yes, you can block senders individually but that doesn't help to manage the spam.

I don't pay for Facebook etc., so if this place is going to be clogged up with Facebook-like garbage I no longer see the need to fund that and at this point my last renewal will be my last renewal.

For a rant, this is exceptionally weak. You can just as easily unsubscribe from notifications entirely and go into just the sub-forums that interest you. It really is not that difficult.

I always go to the General Forum first. Then click on New Posts. We can also collectively improve the NES experience by posting more gun related subject matter. I try to once in a while. Ya, I could probably do a search since everything under the sun has been posted here about guns, but it's just nice to see something new and gun related once in a while. I need to post more. Heck, I'm on here enough. There is a lot of knowledge to be had here.

I bet we lost some good contributers because we have gotten away from talking more about guns. I do enjoy some of the off topic stuff though... skiing, biking, hiking and especially hunting and fishing!

I didn't mind being a paid member back when this was a shooting forum, but I no longer pay because it's no longer much of a shooting forum.
I've never used any sort of social media other than a few actual gun forums and two Triumph forums.
Bigfoot, flat earth, cop hating, vaccine apologists, etc, are of no interest to me other than being amused by the number of lunkheads out there.

...wait.... do you mean, a forum that has 3.6 million posts in Off Topic, but only 2.2 million in firearm discussion isn't about firearms?

Does make for a good argument to get the site renamed, though. 😂

ETA: Besides, if we exclude things, then we'll just have a mass of triggered folks. "How dare a site dedicated to shooting/firearms in the Northeast not allow me to talk about things totally unrelated." It'd be like wanting to join the Boy Scouts if you're not a boy, or a scout....

The Internet and running like a finely tuned watch is an oxymoron. It's just the way it is. It's sorta unrealistic to expect it to be any different. Don't take it too seriously, really, it's a form of entertainment but not life changing. Just go with it.

I'll agree with you on this much: The ignore functionality (and site experience) could be greatly improved if only we could simply ignore by thread (i.e., not just by member). Ignoring an entire sub-forum would be a bridge too far for me personally, but I wouldn't be against that option being available if in addition to ignore by thread. It's no secret that along with many interesting and worthwhile postings on NES that there is a great deal of shitposting too (that may be of interest to some, but not all). Adding an "ignore thread" feature would be huge in my book... maybe not so useful for others.

Isn't that the point of Off Topic? Non gun related threads?
You're right, and it's perfectly fine that there are OT posts. But with so many subforums it's hard to see what's new without clicking each one separately. I'm guessing plenty of people do what I do which is just click new posts and see what's going on. If I could filter out OT I could actually get gun posts that unfortunately get buried under the popular COVID/transgender/racist threads.

A "trick" if you will is when clicking new posts, go right in to off-topic and click "mark read", you can then go back to new posts and they are gone.

Ppl shit all over the gun threads too. God forbid you are from MA and own guns😂😂

But but , what about the lawn thread ?
I dont know if you noticed but most of my time her on NES has shifted to Off Topic….
Been pretty slow around the rest of NES , well except when Greg Derr posts some gun porn

Maybe ban the paywall crap
Hate clicking on links and get hammered with adds and anything but what I thought I was going to see?

Thanks- not sure it will do what I want but I'll give it a shot.

Thank you- that seems like a relatively "quick and dirty" fix.

@EJFudd , great idea and I agree ignore thread would be better than to ignore an entire sub-forum. I do like some of the off topic threads but as you would imagine can do without the "Vaccinated transgenders are turning my children into gay frog zombies" threads.

@whatluck , it takes great self discipline for me to avoid starting pig piles on arf-com. It's a decent forum for the serious topics such as building an AK etc., but it's very quick to go off the rails.

Don't mean to be rude... but hence the title and description.

I don't really care about the HAM radio forum coz I'm not a radio guy. So I don't look at it and read it. Lol

But if you hit the "NEW" tab good luck with that. [laugh2]

NES is also a cigar room of shooters, drinking and talking about their lives. [thumbsup]

Off topic wouldn't be as good without you. You were all over the smart meter.
