DANVILLE - A Danville man was arrested after allegedly cutting off another driver and then threatening him with a loaded handgun during yesterday morning's commute.

Dennis Bieniecki, 24, of 66 Diamond Drive, faces a felony charge of criminal threatening with a handgun following what police described as a road rage incident.

"Road rage is becoming increasingly more common, but not to this degree," Police Chief Wade Parsons said.

Parsons said the trouble began about 6:20 a.m. when Bieniecki pulled out from a side street in front of another motorist who was traveling south on Route 111-A. The chief said the motorist, who was not known to Bieniecki, told police that he had to apply "heavy brakes" to avoid crashing into him.

The motorist, whose name was not released, told police that he raised his hands into the air when Bieniecki cut in front of his vehicle. He continued to follow Bieniecki on Route 111-A and observed him driving "slightly erratically," Parsons said.

The motorist told police that at one point, Bieniecki slowed to about 20 mph and held the clip to a handgun out his driver's side window, Parsons said.

Bieniecki then allegedly held the gun up inside his vehicle and inserted the clip in clear view of the vehicle behind him, Parsons said.

As the vehicles approached the center of town, the motorist spotted a Danville police cruiser driven by Sgt. Ryan Furman. The motorist then yelled for help.

Parsons was called in to assist, and Furman eventually stopped Bieniecki's vehicle a short distance away on Colby Road. During a search of the vehicle, police said, a .40-caliber handgun and loaded clip were found on the front passenger's seat.

Bieniecki was arrested and later arraigned at Plaistow District Court.

He was released on $5,000 personal recognizance bail and is due back in court June 2 for a probable cause hearing.
