Rookie AR question

It all depends on how much YOU want to build.

You could buy a bare upper reciever then the parts to assemble. Charge handle, bolt, fire pin, forward assist, barrel and all needed parts OR buy upper assembly complete ready to go on your lower.

I got in on a group buy for a STAG arms H2 complete upper also included was the parts for the reciever and a stock with buffer spring and tube. Mind you I waited 6 months. It came delivered to my door for 609.00. I then bought a S&W M&P lower to do a final assembly. 127.00 Can not find a Stag or S&W new for that! Also a budget is a huge factor. I set my budget @ 1000.00 or less. Now as the infection spreads I will most likely up grade or some other build.

The more you wish to assemble yourself the more tools you will need. I opted for now to just go the simple route. Complete upper, a lower and a parts kit for the lower. My AR is a bare bones plinker. no fancy triggers, high end scopes ect ect.

You really need to just set a goal, budget, end use. As with anything you can go buget or hell bent broke. I tried to stay in the good for the money zone.

I would start at Brownells and looking at an exploded view of a Colt or DPMS AR. Those are all the parts you need. You can then start to look up the parts and determine what comes in assemblies, kits, etc. As mac1911 mentions, you can go from buying each part individually and choosing exactly what you want or you can buy assemblies that have things pre-configured. All determined by your time, effort, interest, and of course budget.

When building an AR what are the different parts and kits that are needed?

Stripped lower + Lower parts kit
Barrel
...?

To answer a basic question basically:
a stripped lower + LPK + buttstock + upper + furniture

Considering the options in the buttstock & upper category, the rest is easy and yes, I omitted a bunch of small parts like the buffer/spring because they're dependent on the stock options.

I recommend you digest Kuleck & McKee, "The AR-15 Complete Assembly Guide," which is available from a number of sources, before proceeding much further.

(The Midway sku is 559952 and the price is $17.)

+1 on Brownells. You must be careful buying parts as there is a lot of junk out there. Brownells sells quality merchandise and has excellent customer support.
