I'm swapping in a .920 bull barrel on a 10/22, need to decide what to do about the stock. The rifle came with Ruger's black synthetic stock, which of course doesn't fit a bull barrel.

Anybody here with personal experience modifying Ruger's synthetic stock for a bull barrel?

If I decide not to modify the plastic stock (or FUBAR), what good options are available for aftermarket stocks? Folding/collapsible is okay. Looking for something lightweight, not excessively tacticool, and without too much flex. The "Hogue Overmolded" gets negative reviews due to flex. Are they really that bad?

If you can find an OEM stock in laminate wood, I'd go that route. I paid $50 for the one I have - not sure if I'm gonna by a bull bbl or not.

I have a Butler Creek for reg bbl and I like it a lot - it brings the dimensions to adult frame. Weight isn't a big deal and I've never hear of flex being a problem with any synthetic stock.

Yes. I did this recently.

I used a standard Ruger carbine stock. Got a 1" hardwood dowel from the hardware store, and wrapped it with sandpaper. Started with 80 grit and ran the "sanding dowel" up and down the channel. Up and down. Up and down. Checked for fit regularly, and went to progressively finer paper as I got the free-float I was looking for. Worked like a champ, and look pretty good, too. Can't tell it was "altered" unless you look closely. If I get a chance later, I'll try to get a picture up.
