Thought I'd pass this on. A while back I purchased a Ruger 10 mm 1911 love the pistol accurate and built like a tank,my only complaint it throws brass into orbit. So in poking around the various 1911 forums I found out a flat bottom firing pin stop can help reduce the amount that the brass in 1911 of any caliber will be thrown. So I ordered an fbfps from EGW and had it fitted and installed. Went to the range yesterday and though I put only a few rounds thru the pistol the distance the brass was ejected was cut by a third to half. The part was $15 and $25 to install. If I read some posts correctly the Ruger 10mm uses a 20 lb recoil spring and a 30 lb mainspring and it does take a bit of ommph to rack the slide.

bought one love it: first thing i did was replace those crappy rubber grips. the gun little more heavy than a standard 1911 and recoils less than my ported glock 20. did not like the target sights at first until i shot the gun at 100 plus yards; holds right in

the flat firing pin stop was how original 1911's were built. my understanding is that they were considered too difficult to rack the slide on a hammer down, so the tapered firing pin stop was designed to give more leverage on the slide. so going to a flat firing pin stop takes away that moment arm and makes the slide push on the bottom of the hammer (i.e. less leverage). it slows down the slide during firing thus slowing down ejection. another method is to use a heavier mainspring although that will make the trigger a bit heavier.

i run a flat firing pin stop in all 10mm 1911's. definitely improvement in function and will keep the slide from beating the crap out of the frame.

I have the same problem with my Ruger Mini-14. Brass gets tossed up the berm, if I shoot from the last station at the big bore range. I added a brass catcher so at least I can recover the spent cases. Caldwell® AR-15 Picatinny Rail Brass Catcher : Cabela's

this is why mini 14 is called "the rifle that kills to the front and wounds to the right".

no need for a brass catcher. i've posted on this elsewhere. mini 14 afficianodos change out the bushing in the gas block to a smaller port size. factory is eiher 0.08 or 0.10 which is absurdly big. terribly over-gassed. as in retarded level, not "more reliable" but stupid. i'm running a 0.065 or 0.060 which is perfect. hot 5.56 flings ~20 ft. weak 223 flies ~10 ft.
