I have a Ruger MarkI .22lr pistol.

The magazines that came with the gun have the follower pull down button on the left side of the magazine and the gun has a relief in the butt for that button so the magazine will slide into the gun.

Now dummy me bought 4 magazines that were advertised as fitting the MarkI without taking a real good look at them, and low and behold the button to pull the follower down is on the RIGHT side, and will not fit into my gun.

the factory magazines have a slot down both sides of the magazine and could have the button inserted to go either way, the ones I got have a slot down the right side only

Can anyone shed some light on this?

The magazines look identical except for the slot and the button that ride in the slot are on the wrong bleeping side!

If you do some searching on google you will find that "supposedly" they are able to be
converted to work with a Mk I and there are instruction to do this. When I owned a
Mk I, I considered doing this but with the Mk II mags I had I was unable to. You might
fare better.

Unless I mill out a slot in the left side of the magazine it's not going to happen. I'd be afraid to take them apart to machine them, the base plate seems to be stamped into place to retain it.
