Ruger is making an announcement today. Rumor has it that they are introducing the Ruger LC9... a 9mm version of the Ruger LCP.

Maybe not. The press release says it does have a manual safety and a Ca approved LCI:

The slide locks open on an empty magazine and the external slide stop is easy to reach and manipulate for positive firearm functioning. A single-sided manual safety and a magazine disconnect are additional features of the Ruger LC9. A California-approved loaded chamber indicator allows for immediate visual and tactile confirmation that the chamber is loaded. A pivoting external extractor provides reliable extraction of the 9mm cases.

It may just take some time to go through all the EOPS/AG nonsense.

Depends on what you consider "the competition". Assuming it eventually gets Ma legal, the only competition is the PM9.

PM9 with mag weighs 15.9 oz.

Not really a material weight difference. The length and width are both about a half inch bigger on the Ruger, but I suspect the going price will be somewhere near half the price of the Kahr. Sure, it would have been nice to meet or beat the size of the Kahr, but barring any functional problems, I bet this will sell like crazy, at least in Ma.

17.1 oz... booo

A Kahr PM9 is like 15.9 ozs unloaded. So there's no "Boo" about it, the weight isn't that much different, and that's about as light as you can get on a 9mm without making it a POS.

Right, but again there is no PF9 on the Ma roster...... Only one here that is comparable is the PM9 (assuming the LC9 gets approved)

Sugg Retail is $443

My rough estimate based on their other suggested prices this pistol might be in the neighborhood of $350-$380. This price point is in my opinion the best feature.

The PF9 is 12.7oz unloaded, and when you are pocket carrying guns, every single ounce makes a difference.

Really? This is what Ruger considers the next firearm I must own???????????

this is about as exciting as receiving a sweater on Christmas

The single stack 9 is an interesting class of handgun. Ruger's new gun does seem lighter than Sig's new offering (the P290). Kahr's PM9 still looks like the size/weight winner. Keltec plays in this game as does Walther, Taurus and probably others I am forgetting. We really are starting to see the limits of what gun designers can do in a single stack 9mm. I've got a Walther PPS that I like, which is not that much larger than the new Ruger. Lately it's been in the safe more than carried.

My impression of this group is that none of them are true pocket guns. Sure, you can pocket carry anything if you really want, but for most people, myself included, it's a lot harder to hide a j-frame or a PM9 sized gun in a front pocket than it is to carry IWB. The only gun I have that is a true pocket gun for me is the Ruger LCP. And in .380 with a terrible trigger and no useful sights, it's just barely a gun at all.

The question is, how important is a few ounces and 0.2" in thickness for IWB carry? For me, it matters, but not as much as I used to think. So once I've decided to go with the MTAC or Crossbreed, I think, why not carry the Glock? A 19 is easy to hide most days, a 26 is no problem on just about any day, and even a 17 is not too hard if you dress around it.

How many of you guys could carry this new Ruger in your pocket? And if you did carry it in a holster, does the size/weight difference compared to a double stack 9mm make that much difference?

Not sure about the Ruger, but a PM9 or PF9 or J Frame are very easy to pocket carry for me. The Glock 26 is just too big. Not sure if the extra half inch length and width will make that much of a difference for pocket carry.

And I agree. If it has to go in a holster, size doesn't really matter that much.... go double stack.

I carry a PPS and I still think this would be a great gun to own :)

same here...

same here as well. [laugh]

for the record, i've actually pocket carried my PPS on more than one occasion with the 7 round mag [shocked] but now that old man winter is here, the G19 all the way.... sir walther only comes out if i can wear flip flops.

edit to add: this gun still seems like a nice option to have if gets the Mass blessing... can't be worse than a PK380 [rofl]

You have a point, but then again OAL also makes a difference, and if we're going to nitpick about that, the PF9 loses to the PM9 pretty much instantly. (The distance from the top of the grip to the top of the slide on the PF9 is longer) Not sure how this Ruger stacks up. The Ruger does not look as small as the PM9 does. My guess is it's more along the lines of the PPS.

Economist has a very good point, too... . at some point or another (which varies depending on the person) there is a line in the sand where these things cease being pocket guns and end up being "easy IWB" guns instead. Then you have to make that decision as to whether or not its even worth it, as once you are in IWB land, it doesn't take much "more" to carry a G26, G19, etc.

def looks like pps competition. i'll stick with my kahr pm9 but this ruger at $400 would be a great concealed carry 9mm. not the "next gun i have to have" as its pretty useless for me for my brother is getting MA LTC soon and this would fit his budget. hope it gets approved for sale here, looks like its got all the proper safeties. only missing the "if you can read this dont pull trigger" warning on the barrel crown.
