Ruger Mark III Jam

Anyone know why this problem might be happening. Each jam is the same, I attached a picture.

How often does it happen? Does it do it more often with a specific magazine?

I've heard good things about the VQ extractor preventing these types of stovepipes.
 
My Mark II does this all the time. Google "Ruger stovepipe" and you'll find lots of good information.

Eisenhow's recommendation of the Volquartsen extractor is a good one, too. I did this on my Mark II, and the errors decreased.

You can also round the edges of the magazines. I did this on one of my two magazines, but to be honest, I haven't seen any difference in the rate of extraction errors between the two magazines. I may not have taken enough of the edge off, though, and this may work for you.


I also switched the ammo I was using, since my Mark II is hella-picky. It likes the CMP .22 ammo best, but it does okay with the big Federal boxes of 550 from Wal-Mart.
 
I have a MkIII 22/45 that did that at least once with every mag. Read all the threads at the rimfire forum. Tried every brand of ammo, all the mag "tuning" tips and the VQ extractor with no change. Made a couple of dummy rounds and watched the extraction/ejection process closely. The empty would sometimes clear the ejector pin when the bolt came back. The slot in the bolt for the pin is fairly wide so I bent the pin so it's closer to the ejection port side of the bolt. Now I'll get a jam like this once or twice in 1K rounds.
 
Had this happen to me a lot. VQ extractor and try different types of ammo. Like stated above the cheap WallyWorld Federal packs run great.
 
Thanks for the info, it is happening about two out of fifty rounds. I labelled the mags and found no difference. I had taken the pistol apart to clean for the first time since buying it used. Never had a problem before I took it apart.

You may have too much lube or not enough lube. There is a happy medium that they need to function and not crap up.

I only have that problem when mine is very dirty. I use Mobile 1 as my lube to help fight carbon deposits

I'd guess too little, based upon my experience with Ruger autos.

And I second the recommendation of Mobil 1.
 
Pretty much what is left in the 5-quart jug of whatever weight the car is getting; 5-40 in the Spring and 0-30 in the Fall. I leave the jug upside down overnight and drain it into my little range bottle.
