I've been weighing the purchase of a mini 30 to shoot cheap mil. surp. ammo. Before you guys tell me to "Get a SKS!" know that I live in Boston city limits and due to Mayor Mumbles I can't possess such a nice rifle. [thinking]

Does anyone have any experience shooting mil. surp. ammo through a mini 30? Has anyone heard anything negative about doing so? I've read some stuff online, but I'm not sure what to think of it.

mini 30

i've had the stainless one for about 8 yrs
shoots any ammo i can find--never a problem
my rifle in NOT a tack driver--
for the fun of it i put a scope and a red dot on it
did not improve the accuracy any
i never clean it---just shoot it
i keep it duct taped under my bed
i have put more ammo thru it than any other
rifle that i own

i would buy another one!

I suppose as long as you clean it thoroughly after each session you should be fine since most of the milsurp I see is corrosive. Personally I won't touch the stuff since I don't always get to clean my gun right away.

I know the Mini 14 is chambered for military ammo as well as civillian so I can't see why the Mini 30 would be any different. I think the biggest things you'll notice would be more kick, heavier fouling, and light primer strikes.
Those alone would deter me from investing in one.

As far as corrosive ammo goes, the only corrosive 7.62x39 readily available now is Yugoslavian and old Chinese.

What about a Mini 14? Mine shoots Brown Bear .223 no problem and thats Russian.

Interesting, as I consider the Mini 30 to be a more formidable weapon, what with detachable 20 round magazine capability and all. How is it Mumbles would allow the Mini but not the SKS? Also, before you get too deep into it you may want to check out the pricing on 7.62x39, as I'd hardly call it "cheap". [grin]

Going to be hard to find centerfire rifle ammo that is cheaper than 7.62x39. And an earlier poster was right: most of the ammo on the market is non-corrosive. Can you have a Saiga in Boston?
