I shot one before and the only thing I didn't like were the factory grips. They were too small and there were no finger grooves. I think I would have been happier if it had hogue (sp?) grips.
They're a bit heavy for pocket carry, but the extra weight makes the recoil much lighter than an airweight smith. I'd be a lot more comfortable recommending the SP101 for a new shooter than a 642/442 for this reason. After shooting one, I really wanted one. I think making me buy new guns is why Negotiator puts them in IDPA matches as pickup guns.
I got a Ruger sp101 as my first pistol. Mine has the 3" barrel. I found it a little heavy and large to carry for only 5 shot cylinder. That said, it is a stout pistol, and I shoot all sorts of .357 and .38 reloads through it. I think I paid 400 and change at 4 seasons. I don't carry it often, unless I am wandering around the woods.
