I am thinking about picking up one just because I want one and I think its cool. I don't plan on using it for CAS. So should I just get it in. 45lc. Or. 357. With the 357 can I only shoot lead or can I use fmj. Im leaning towards. 45 I don't reload but I don't plan to shoot it alot. Thanks.

If you're going to shoot 45 Colt ammo in any quantity you'd better lean to reload.
There's no generic 45 Colt ammo that I know of and the cheapest ammo I've seen of late were reloads at Dick's and I think they were around $50 for 250 rounds. Haven't priced 45 Colt ammo but I'm willing to bet factory ammo is somewhere near $40 a box of 50. Other than that the 45 Colt is a blast to shoot.

.45 LC is expensive if you don't reload. I don't know of any factory fmj for that load. I have an an Old Model Vaquero and an M1894 Winchester in .45 LC, but if I was going to do a lot of shooting I'd opt for the .357.

Another option would be to have Ruger fit a .45 ACP cylinder to the gun (or a very good gunsmith) so you have some versatility between two .45 calibers. I am fairly confident that Ruger would do this for you, but you would have to pay.

Time to reload!

The .45 Colt is a ton of fun to shoot, and can be set up as hot or as mild as you want it. I shoot it out of my Puma 92 as well, and the recoil is almost .22-like.

Commercial cowboy loads can be had in the $36 range, but even that's too much.

Reload!

If it's the ONLY one you're going to buy I'd go .45 Colt. If your thinking about CAS down the road, go .357.

All my Colt Single Actions except one is in .45. The one is a .44 Special.

I'll bet you'll shoot it and hate it - it won't print well on paper - if you don't remember that you hold a plow handled Single Action different. You hold it with your middle and ring fingers and your thumb. Curl your little finger UNDER the grip frame. Well, that is if you shoot it one handed like they were designed to be shot. If you shoot it "Squaw Paw" - two handed or try to leave your little finger on the grip frame your point of impact will not be the same.

Good luck with it. Nice pistols.

I shot a Ruger Vaquero in .45 LC 2 weekends ago, and it was awesome. I found it to be extremely accurate.

I own two Vaqueros.... One Old Model, one New Model. The New Model. The New Model is a Davidson's exclusive and is a factory fitted with two cylinders one 45LC and one 45ACP. It's a little more expensive then the standard Vaquero but if you're going to buy a new one go big or go home....

The Davidson's experience was excellent and there's a lifetime warranty. I wouldn't hesitate to go through them again. Just my opinion, but that's what I'd buy.

I love the Vaquero I bought about a month ago. It is a 357 magnum, and it is my favorite gun to shoot so far I think. especially with the "Magtech Cowboy Loads" I bought. I bought it as a high-gloss stainless, and had some stuff done to it. Next up is a 45lc. So, to me either caliber is fun to shoot. I don't pay attention much to cost of ammo, and I don't reload.

I have the New Vaquero in 45LC. It's the polished stainless and I still have the plastic grips. I'm having a tough time trying to decide if I want a light or dark colored wood grip.

Yea i am obsessed with getting one in .45lc and just been looking at grips online. just not sure if i like the 5 1/2 barrel or 4 5/8 barrel .

I bought myself a Ruger Blackhawk (new model), Bisley, in .45 LC. 7.5" barrel. It definitely has some weight to it, and I don't find that it balances well. But it sure is purdy and is fun to shoot!

Is there any particular reason to get the Vaquero vs the Blackhawk, assuming the same caliber?

I'd like to see someone offer a special edition buntline Vaquero....

I've always been a fan of faux ivories on a six shooter.... It's funny, recently I've been changing my blued guns back to wood stocks.... I've decided I like the look of ivory or even stag on polished stainless/nickle better.

What caliber did you get?
