I have a very nice 3914 that my daughter loves to shoot. The only problem is that she's left handed and this particular example doesn't have an ambidextrous safety/decocker lever. I've seen pictures of several in various for sale posts that do have them and my 6906 has one.

So, my question is what is involved in adding a lever to the right side of the slide? The cut out is there already.

I'm guessing that this is something that I should either bring out to Smith or find a local gunsmith that will do the job, but what do get some ideas from the members here.

I believe that S&W will do it for you. I know that they have a package that they can do where they make a 3rd gen Smith decock only (so that when you push the lever to "safe," the hammer de-cocks but when you release the lever it returns to the "fire" position), and I've read a few reports online of people having this done after having issues with the safety. For instance, accidentally activating it when racking the slide or holstering and causing them to draw a gun that won't fire when the trigger's pulled.

The way I see it, if S$W will deactivate or remove a safety for you, chances are they'll be willing to add a de-cocker for you. FWIW, the mod I mentioned above is $75 or so at the factory from what I've read online. A gunsmith might do it for you, but some are hesitant to modify safeties for various reasons.

Thanks, I'll have to get in touch with S&W Customer Service. It might be worth the drive out there to have it done. Esp. if they can do it the same day.

I've called them with questions about guns of theirs that I don't even own and they've been plenty helpful. I'd call before driving out there, you never know what they may say.
