I picked up a 629 a few weeks ago as I felt the need to own at least one S&W. Not happy with the quality issues I've seen in the newer offerings I went with an older one... a 'dash 2'.
Well, come to find out when I got it home the barrel wasn't clocked correctly. This explains the rear sight being adjusted way over to the right.
I proceeded to disassemble it completely, introduce it to the vise and large wrench and clock the barrel properly. I'm also not a fan of bright, shiny guns and this one had enough scratches and wear that I decided to bead blast the entire thing.
I also removed the stock grip in favor of a Hogue. When the Hogue arrived I installed it but had some issues with its fit to my hand. The fact that I didn't really care for the factory finish (too plasticy looking) helped in deciding to strip it and do a little carving to better fit my paws. I used a spirit dye in 'English red' and a few applications of Tru-Oil leaving the wood texture visible.
The end result.
Now I can call it my own...
