What would cause the cylinder to lock up on a s&w 640-1. I was shooting 357 mags and it locked up 3 out of 5 rounds. Keep in mind this gun does not have an internal safty lock. Every thing apprears to look as it should inside and out. Any sugestions would be much appreciated.

Also, be aware that you need to clean under the extractor star. Any small particles will keep the star from seating properly and cause binding.

It seems tight. I hold the cylinder with one hand and try to turn the end of the ejector rod and it does not budge one way or the other.

Any time that you try to tighten the ejector rod be sure to place empty/spent cartridges in the chambers so that the star will have more support.

There were shells in there when I checked to see if it was loose.

When I cleaned it after it happend, under the star was kind of dirty. I just cant belive that a small about of crud could lock it up like that. Is 357 dirty ammo?

They were remington 125 grain semi jacketed hp's. I gave it a good cleaning. I guess ill see how she does tonight.

i've fired some filthy nasty shit through my 19--but i don't think it was enough to cause a failure... if so we need to re-evaluate the "wheel guns are unstopptable" mantra.

let us know how your gun works, snubking. anyone have any extra suggestions for me and my poor model 19 while we're on the subject of jacked up revolvers? [cheers]

My thoughts exactly. I kind of just assumed that because its a revolver it will just work. As its my only carry gun at the moment. Im going to have to keep my fingers crossed.

Revolvers wear out too. I have a 686 set up as a PPC gun that started locking up after many 1,000's of rounds. I think it's the star. Someday I'll send it out to a good gunsmith but it seems like good revolver gunsmiths are harder to find these days.

PM me if you decide to send it to someone--i may also be interested. this thing shot GREAT up until it just randomly started having minor issues and now you can't even shoot the bastard. i've debated sending it back to S&W but i can't afford it, really.

I called S&W but they want me to ship them the gun along with a letter explaining the issue and they'll get back to me with a quote. No thanks.

I'll probably ask Greg Derr when it comes time, but money's tight and PPC season is over anyway.

S&W realy said that? WTF, over?

let me know what you decide to do, i'd love to have my 19 back. for having a 2" barrel the thing shot laser beams.

Bullet setback? Popped primer, any flow from the primer into the firing pin channel? I had some S&B 158 gr 357 bind my gp100. They showed pressure signs.

Attempted to shoot some more today after a good cleaning. NO GOOD. Thing locked up right off the bat. It has somthing to do with the cylinder release. Im going to talk with the NES member that i aquired it from and hopefully undo this deal.

Well, take a look at the stud that comes out of the frame to push the ejector rod pin out, you can test it with the cylinder open, for that matter test the pin in the center of the ejector star. A burr can hang up the openning and closing.
