I just picked up a S&W 908 pistol 9mm from a neighbor who is moving out of state and can't take his guns. He has never fired it. Brand new in box with 2 mags and all original books. Gave him $150 for it.He had it in a drawer sinse new and does'nt recall when he bought it. How can I tell what the manufacture date is on this gun. And yes he has a MA LTC and transfer paper work has been filed. What a sweet little pistol. Thanks
Jim

That is a screaming deal on that pistol! The 908 is a great pistol - lightweight, compact and mine are very accurate (I have three of them - you can see how much I like them!).
Since you have the box, you can tell when it was made by looking at the four digit number under "Spec. Ord." on the label. This number uses a Julian date code to tell when it was made - the first number is the last digit of the year it was made, the last three are the day of the year it was made. For example, if the number was "1072", the pistol was made in 2011, on the 72nd day of the year (which is today, by the way).

Yours might say something like "2135", which would put it at the 135th day (sometime in May) of 2002. Hope this makes sense.

Congratulations on the new pistol! You're going to love it. And if you don't want it, feel free to PM me!

Oh, man. I thought this was a WTS post when I first saw it. I couldn't believe no one else had jumped on it before me. :) Congrats on the new gun.

That sounds about right. Also, if the little envelope with the fired case is still in the box that will have the date it was test fired, which will be fairly close to the time it was assembled.

That is the only reason I like them including that little envelope. [grin]

No little envelope, but there is a orange plastic thing about an inch and a half long, open at one end and tapered to close on the other with tabs about half way down. Any idea what that is?
Thanks
Jim

You put the pointed end in the chamber, and the "flag" thing that sticks out, sticking out of the slide to keep the slide out of battery and to show people the gun is empty when on display.

That's a chamber flag. With the slide open, you put the tapered end in the barrel, then close the slide. The tab will stick up through the ejection port. It's just something to show that there is no round in the chamber.

Beat me to it - I'm a little slow on the trigger today!

The spec ord. number on the sticky on the box is the manufacture date. It is in Julian date. First no. is yr. the last 3 are day of the yr. Julian is 365 days. So 6344 is 2006, the 344th day.
