I picked up the E series scandium, bobtail last week. Shot it Sunday, everything went fine, love the gun.
Here's my dilemma, I took it apart to clean it, and noticed something not quite right.
Looking down the mag well from the top of the frame, you see the open area where the trigger assembly would slide out, there is some jagged metal/cracked area at the top of that. I can't quite explain it, but I am including a picture. Should I be worried and send it back? Or jus chalk it up to a machining error?

I'm no 1911 guru, but I don't think you'll have a critical failure. It would bug the shit outta me though!

Oh, it's bugging me alright. I just sent a text to my dealer, I know he will do whatever it takes, but these are so scarce, it's not like he can just swap it out for me.

That's bad. I would be very concerned that a piece will break off and get jammed in the sear/disco. This is why you inspect guns before you buy them

Could this be just slag or flash from the casting job? Casting the alloy they use is a lot different from casting/milling stainless steel.

If you knew it when you bought it and received a decent discount then fine. Buy I'm assuming you paid full or close to retail and now you dont have what you paid for. Return it, shoot something else for a month or 5

My concern is, I waited so long to get this, if I send it back, how long will I have to wait for a new one.

I would be on the phone with S&W getting a call tag, or more likely, dropping it off at the guard shack at S&W by now.

My problem, is, they're repair might be just to file the area, which I can do myself. I would only return it for a replacement.

Look at it like this. It's no cost to send it back for repair/replacement. They'll pay the shipping. You'll have the peace of mind knowing you have a safe gun. If you file it down you just might void the lifetime warranty.

So, you might wait a bit more. The anticipation can be similar to a sexual encounter.[smile]

Ok. Here's where I'm at so far. I went to a friends house, who has a S&W E series 3".
We took it apart to inspect the area I am having the issue with. What it looks like is, during the machining process, I looks like mine wasn't machined all the way, leaving a paper thin area of aluminum. His looks like a keyhole slot machined out. On the inside of mine, the rounded portion of that keyhole had some leftover material that I can easily file out, correcting the problem, and will look identical to what it should look like. S&W would end up doing the exact same thing, but take a month to do so. Off I go, wish me luck!

The bullshit part is no one at S&W saw this. You would think they would of had an inspection after machining then after anodizing and then before final assembly yet no one saw this. I saw it in person and it looked horrible.

Crisis was averted. Easy DIY fix. When I first noticed it, the was a spot where the thin area of aluminum could have broken off and fallen into the sear area, (hell, i pulled the piece out with a plastic pick), causing a malfunction. Now it's good as new. Just sucks that nobody from S&W noticed!

Well, that was easy I guess. It looked a lot worse than it actually was... like it was cracked or something.

It was cracked, just happens to be the piece that wasn't supposed to be there in the first place. Until seeing what it was supposed to look like, I was worried about the safety aspect of the firearm.

Wow, that was something they should have caught in the factory! I'd expect that kind of quality out of a Kia, NOT a major gun manufacturer.

Glad it turned out to be an easy fix! I wouldn't have wanted to send it back either... I looked at that same E series a couple weeks ago at Flint. Beautiful!
