I just recently purchased a new S&W MP Shield in .40. The first thing I noticed was this handgun had a very hard slide stop action. To the point where it literally takes two fingers to disengage it. Anyone out there experiencing the same issue? And can recommend a fix for this? I have heard to file down the slide stop catch, but I'm worried that could cause more harm than good.

It's new and will loosen up. Give it a couple of months and see if there's a difference. Mine was hard at first and required two fingers. Now it works good and only one finger needed.

Is it hard with an empty magazine in it? If so, every gun I've owned or shot was hard to release the slide with the magazine in it. That's how they are when there's an empty magazine in it. Take the magazine out and release the slide and it should be noticeably easier.

It is hard in both instances. The only time I've noticed it being SLIGHTLY easier, was when I shot about 20 rounds through it and it starts to heat up.

I see. Well then it probably just needs to be broken in a bit. I've got a Kahr CM9 which is small like the shield and it's definitely the hardest out of all of my pistols to release the slide. Must be common with smaller carry guns.

There all like that, I think per S&W it is a slide stop and just that, they recommend that you rack the slide to release. That being said mine has loosened up a little.

Ok that makes sense. Have you noticed when racking the slide to put a cartridge in battery, that it kind of stutters a little bit? I checked and confirmed it was properly seated and in battery, but it almost felt/sounded like it didn't quite going into battery. By using the slingshot slide release method or just over the top pull back and release. Your thoughts?

Shoot it allot, clean it & lube it... Then

The More you do this the slide stop, will break in just fine!
The trigger & action will improve too...
Most guns now a days shoot good out of the box, but that does NOT mean they do not have to be broken-in!

just it on the couch opening and releasing it for a few hours.

shooting its fun, but the thing ony gets used on the first and last shot. so unless your going to shot one round per mag :-))

after operating it about 100 times, it got to the point that i can release it with my thumb.

I have not noticed that with mine. are you pulling back and letting it go? that could happen if your riding it closed

I had a similar issue with a friend so new M&P 9mm full-size; the technician at Four Seasons said the same as above, namely that using the slide stop as a release can damage internal components, and that manufacturers direct use of the "slingshot" method.

My M&P40 full size feels like that when I use the slide release/stop. Almost like it stutters as the round goes up the feed ramp. Never fails to properly seat though, just felt odd the first few times.

i talked to a gun Smith friend of mine with my M&P40 and he showed me how to use a straight file to remove just an ever so tiny amount of material from the slide stop, this worked excellent along with the normal break in...afterwards the side stop would disengage easily with my thumb just like a slide release, had it a year and a half now with no problems whatsoever

I had the same issue with my 9mm shield. That being said usually with striker fired handguns, I rack the slide when reloading or releasing the slide. I try not to use the slide release. Mine has gotten better with use.

this^^

put at least 200 rounds through it then reassess.
cant judge it until it gets fully broken in.
