Nice to carry, painful to shoot in anything other than .38 Special.

Go for the Model 64. TRUST me on that.

I do trust you. I've fired hundreds of rounds out of a Model 64 and it's been a great time.

Being that the NG, in for example the .38 +P model is built on a K-Frame with a 2.5 inch barrel, is it really that bad to shoot? It's still a K and the grip seems decent...

I don't think the 315 is a problem. Step up to the 386 Nightguard loaded with 125 grain .357s and your hand will sting.

Another deal killer is that Nightguards come with grips that cover the backstrap, making the reach to the trigger impossibly long for me. So in addition to the price premium for a new scandium revolver, I need to add a pair of grips to suit me.

I've got big hands, so it might work for me, but my friend who work for S&W claims they are "crap grips" for such an expensive revolver. He did say that they are great with better grips.

This would be a gun that would see limited time at the range - just enough to remain proficient and would serve more as a limited carry gun, if I were to purchase one.

I really like the night sights on the gun!
